    ZR4 vs H5 in G21

How does the H5 do in a G21? I am looking at getting a G21 but worried the H5 won't have enough power. I also saw the ZR4 is the stock engine for 18, and the H5 is an upgrade. It seems strange to pay more to go from 409 to 355 hp. What do you think?

h5 is direct injection from my understanding. Drove G21 yesterday with 409 and is great

I have the H5 in my 2016 G21 and it powers the boat well.

Yes the ZR4 has more HP than the H5, but the H5 has more torque. Sorry I can't remember the numbers. I think from a seat of the pants experience, both engines will be similar. The H5 should be a little more fuel efficient since its direct injected. For what it's worth the ZR4 in my GS20 seems more thirsty than the ZR450 in my 2011 210. Maybe in need a few more hours on my ZR4. Time will tell.

You get 5 more ft lbs when you drop down to the 355hp.

I think I would chose 45 HP over the 5 ft lbs. torque turns things. Hp gets work done.

I was thinking the H5 had about 30 ft/lbs. more torque than the ZR4 for some reason. I thought the ZR4 had 400 ft/lbs and the H5 had 430 ft/lbs. At least I seem to recall seeing that somewhere, but could be wrong.

I do know one thing for sure. The price difference made it a no brainer for me to go with the ZR4 when I ordered my GS20. Its hard for me to believe that Nautique will be building very many boats with the H5. I just think that most people will choose the ZR4 or H6 if they want more power. I also don't think dealers will order many boats with the H5. Nautiques are already at the highest price point in the market and sales people don't want a 355 hp $5000 engine option when customers who just looked at a Supra or Malibu with 400 hp come in to look at boats. Its hard to argue less HP for more money with customers who aren't already brand loyal to Nautique.

You will not really feel a difference in performance between the engines. The most important thing is the fuel consumption.
In Europe, you will also get a discount on insurance/tax, due to less HP and better exhaust gas values.

                  torque > horsepower.
Being said, Ive owned a G21 with both the 409 and the H5. I didn't notice much of a difference. If I did it again, I would do the 409 because of price. Fuel consumption was not noticeably less with the H5 to make paying more upfront worth it.
Both handle extra weight in the boat well. You will be happy with either engine.

also, I've had and heard too many 5.3L engines with lifter chatter to pay extra for one.

Surround, I had one of those 5.3s. As long as pcm doesn't start putting active fuel management in them they'll be fine!

What's your concern on the AFM, agree would not make as much sense in a boat, but great and reliable in car/trucks.

Is the general consensus that the H5 is enough engine in a G21. I'm planning to order a 2018 and I was strongly considering the H6. I have the 343 in my 2015 210 and even with a prop change I'm still lacking in the power when we have it fully loaded and a group of people to get up to wakeboard speed. I don't want to buy another boat and have that concern. I'm demoing a 15 with the 409 on Wednesday to see what I think. The dealer doesn't have a new one to demo.

I have an H5 in a 200 and its an awesome engine. The torque comes on very low in the RPM range and its very snappy and responsive. It is also very quiet. Personally, if I wanted more power I would get the H6. I am now a believer in direct injection.

We have the H5 in ours and it does great..we do a lot of tubing/surfing..over the 4th, 6-200-250lb people and 6-110-135lb people, full ballast, gas, gear, coolers, etc..no problems at all..pulled all day, burned approx +/-15 gallons of gas for 5 hrs of surfing, idling, etc..
