Why does everyone need larger wakeboard boats?

In my boat I have room for 6 and I prefer to take out 4 because that means I have more time to ride.

If you have a boat that you can put more than 10 people in. You are never going to get to be behind it. And if it is all about the party and not riding why not get a pontoon.
How do you rationalize needing a 22 foot boat?

RE: Why does everyone need larger wakeboard boats?

I have the 216 which is rated for 10, but I can only find seating for 6-7 comfortably. As soon as put the hydrofoil in the boat (behind the driver) and a pair of dogs, nobody is moving anywhere! I am a family of 4 and would like to be able to take another family of 4 with us. I'm very excited to try the 220. I don't have a lake house, or I probably would have a pontoon boat - and the 216!

I've asked myself that same question. I grew up with an 18 ft inboard, family of 5 at the time, and we always seemed to have more than enough room, even if we took another family.

I think we all just carry a ton of crap in the boats these days. Everyone has to have there own vests, gloves, wakeboard, waterski, kneeboard, and even tubes. Some even bring their own ropes. Then there are the coolers, backpacks, extra clothes, etc., etc. Folks can't seem to get in the boat without four or five bottled waters and a six pack of beer. Add in a bunch of speakers, amplifiers, etc. and the room runs out pretty quickly.

From a performance standpoint, I think wakeboarding itself is changing. Riders are using longer ropes, and higher speeds. Rather than looking for ways to pop from the wake, they are looking to create launch ramps, or jumps if you will. Not unlike hitting a ski jump. Bigger, wider, and heavier boats, create this moving launch ramp of water.

        my 2 cents.

            RE: Ridiculous

jon4pres, I know what you're saying with the seeming trend toward bigger boats. I don't like to go out with more than four total riders otherwise it's too long between sets. Couple that with the fact that my garage won't handle a larger than 21' boat and our local water there's a 22' length restriction anyway.

Sure enough, the pros are going freakin' huge and the bigger boats allow for more "party" space and bigger launch ramps. My SAN puts down WAY more wake than I can handle and space isn't a problem for up to 6 peeps. Granted I don't have kids or dogs, nor do we spend the entire day on the water. My prediction is that gas prices will never back down and the behemoth 24 footers will eventually become a hard sell like SUVs are starting to become.

bkhallpass. Well said. I guess that it would be nice to have more storage space.
I still dont see the need for these huge boats for Wakeboarding. For partying they would be great but for wakeboarding it just means you have to wait for 10 other people to ride before you get a set.
That x-80 is just insane and at 130k new. Wow. Can you even pull that thing with a standard truck?

Boat and trailer appear to weigh about 7500 lbs total w/out gear, so it'd probably require at least a 3/4 ton pickup (or equivalent) unless you only have a very short trip to the ramp.

If all you ar edoing is going out for a set, then there is no need. But, most of us buy boats to enjoy on the water for more than just riding or skiing. It is nice to have the big boat when in rough water. Also nice to have when you want to put in all the friends and go for the day. Gas uses is not that different for us... but that could be a side effect of putting 2-3k Lbs in a boat no matter what size.

                  Big boats are nice...

It might be just me but this seems a little off the point to me. The topic is with regards to wakeboard boats, which is specific niche in the boating market and not directed toward the masses. If I was in the so-called majority and wanted a boat that was good for rough water and other things other than riding or skiing, I'd certainly opt for a Sea Ray, a Cobalt or similar that would be much better suited for those purposes. I think both brands are even slapping towers on their rigs to suit the multi-purpose riders.

If I could have a Cobalt and a wakeboard boat I would. But, unfortunately, I have to make due with just one expensive water toy. So for me, when I look at boats it has to be the boat I ride behind, and the one I hang out on. I buy a boat primarily for watersports performace, so I will not choose a runabout with a tower.

                          Jon4pres,

I'll take a guess and say you don't have any kids. If I'm wrong - no offense. My family and friends are the reason I have a larger boat. You have to add 1 foot on to your current ride for every 4 year old and one of her friends. 2 kids + 2 friends = 4 feet!!!! And remember all the crap that they bring. Also, someone mentioned above about a run-about when looking for a larger boat. I am a skier, wakeboarder, kneeboarder, footer etc. and I will NEVER sacrifice the performance of a direct drive or V-drive for an I/O or outboard for towed watersports. That is THE bottom line and I think others will agree. There are great boats for speed and fishing, riding in rough water with tons of room etc. but they are not inboard Wakeboard/Ski boats. I went from a 2000 Super Air to a 2005 226 Team and we just don't bump each other as much when standing up. That 5 inches extra in width provides just enough extra space. I parallel this type of question when someone asks me why I have a Crew Cab truck instead of an Extra Cab. Deep down inside my first gut reaction is duh - don't you see the two car seats in the back seat - but if you really seriously have to ask me that question it's usually because that haven't crossed that path in boating/towing yet - but someday they will see. So all you guys with the 20 and 21 footer's - you'll get the bug some day and you will be so happy and never look back. I't's like 18 inch rims, they were cool when you got the truck but you are dying for the 20's or 22's!!!!!!!

Have a great rest of summer. (It was 103 degrees Tue and Wed in SA TX)

No I dont have any kids I am seeing your point. Now it all makes sence to me. I guess I will go out and buy that x80. Its only money right. But seriously I do understand you guys with families need bigger boats. I took a couple of my cousins out in my 82 and they were not the problem but their parents that sent suitcases full of crap that they needed for 3 hours on the water.
When I go I am lucky if I remember to bring a towell

X80 is a bit overkill. Anything that has twin engines optional, is not a wakeboard boat. The Tige 24v is as big as is practical. The 23' LSV is also a nice size. We are going out on an XStar and possibly an X45 this weekend, so we will see how they are for size.
