WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN AIR AND A PRO AIR
To see the difference between the Total Wake Control (TWC) hull of the
pro air, and the Total Surface Control ( TSC) hull of the air, go the
correctcraftfan.com. Click on References. Open the 1999 sales brochure.
Go to page 4. There is a picture of the running surfaces of both hulls.
The pro air hull has a step bottom near the middle, and a series of strakes
designed to lift the front of the boat, drop the bottom of the boat, and produce
a larger and cleaner wake, with less ballast than the TSC hull. On the other hand, the TSC hull can provide a better waterski wake than the TWC hull.
do you slalom behind your super air?? I own a 99 pro air and I was thinking of moving some lead weight as far as I could get it into the nose of the boat and empty all other ballast tanks to see if the slalom wake would improve.
This may be a stupid idea but I was thinking this could improve the slalom wake by causing the boat to plane out more so/keep the rear from sinking so much as it was designed for (when wakeboarding).
We do occassionally slalom (free skiing only) behind the super air. Keep in mind that despite skiing for over 35 years, I just don't ski often or well anymore (too many injuries). The waterski wake certainly sucks compared to the SN or Sport. However, I'd say the SAN waterski wake is smaller than a a typical I/O and certainly much softer (ironic given the SAN's hard bucking wake at wakeboard speeds). It does have a definite trough (unlike the direct drive CCs) and the rooster is pretty big at 22 off. Mikeski is an excellent skier and he recently skied behind my SAN at 28 off. He skied well behind the boat. Mike commmented that at 34mph + the wake really wasn't much worse than an SV211.
For your pro air, definitely drain the ballast. Before you add weight in the front, I'd say go for a ski with 2 people in the bow and a driver only. If you feel the waterski wake improves then you're on to something. I think
you'll find that speed makes as big a difference as anything. At 36 mph, I
bet the boat planes well and the waterski wake is pretty good . At 34 it is still probably ok. As you drop down from there I would expect a big drop off in quality of waterski wake. I've skied behind a Pro Air about 4 years ago. It certainly wasn't a great ski boat as compared to my 98SN, but I don't recall it being that bad either.
I'd be intersted to know what you learn from you experimentation.
thats good to know about the super air slalom wake....however, i would imagine most boats direct drive or vdrive would have a pretty good slalom wake at 35mph 28 off.....i bet the wake worsens drastically at 22 or 15 off
15 off is ok. 22 off is right in the rooster. Some Vdrives have brutal wakes at any speed
because of the very deep V hull shape. The SAN is shaped flat enough that if you get it up
to speed, it's ok. Not great, just ok in my opinion.
I would be curious to ski behind a SAN at 15off to see the difference between the wake of my 99 Pro Air. It is a direct drive but has the hull deticated to wakeboarding that sinks the back end. I would also consider the slalom wake as ok at 15 off. 22 off is right at the rooster tail and I have not skied it any shorter. Most direct drive boats have a good wake once you go shorter than 22 off.
