I'm thinkin about getting a boat I can surf behind.Something like a 210/220.I've seen the picts of the boats burried to the gunwales with ballast.I'm wondering if anybody has an idea what the boat is drafting under these conditions.
thanks!
yup...28inches is the draft before adding ballast. I'm trying to figure what the draft might be loaded.
I'd hate to buy a new boat, only to find the boats draft loaded is 4ft.
I've read around here that 10ft is deep enough, but we are over on the colorado river, near blythe, and the water depth varies from 3ft to 12ft...depending on the releases coming out of the dam.
Any input from those of you who surf would be greatly appreciated.
4 feet might not be too far off the mark. For a 210 the draft is 28", which is an idle measurement. Pre-plainning speed would add at least another 12" to the 28 so now you are up over 3 feet. 1000 pounds of stock ballast to a boat that weighs 3800 pounds will displace even more water so maybe 5 feet to be safe? Just a guess.
measure from the water's edge to a point on the boat that you feel would be the new waterline, and then add a margin for error and takeoff. I would agree with the 5' guess for safety.
thanks for the replies. so it sounds like the boat needs at least 5ft to be safe. Not so sure surfng the river would be such a great idea. Its no wonder I never see anybody surfing out there. I guess its possible, if I can find a stretch of river thats at least 7-8ft.
Even if the draft would not be an issue, 5' is not really deep enough to get a nice roll for surfing. Alos, you would not want to ruin the nice calm water in a river with surfing, probably another reason you don't see people doing it. We ride the Brazos around here and it's pretty much a known not to surf out there, go to the local lakes that are already all chopped up.
