236 Custom POLK woofers - Whoa!

I recently was at the SEMA show in Vegas. Not sure what the acronym means but it's a performance automotive aftermarket trade show. Anything outrageous in cars would be displayed at this show. I ran across the Polk audio booth and they had this 2007 236 on display with a custom set up of speakers. The woofers especially caught my eye. The fit and finish looked as good in person as it does in the photo. this was quite the task considering the designer had 5 days to create something "outrageous." They are removable so that the seat can go back in for those passengers who are not so outrageous...While I would take the more practical road (more storage than sound) there might be some sound enthusiasts that might appreciate this...

That 220 was at Lake Austin last weekend. I was told there is about 25k in audio system so far. It sounded soooo schweet. Took that 220 and a 236 to dinner down river that evening , and from the boat we were on (236) you could hear it loud and clear at 40mph.

It looks totally impractical to me. I understand the "whoa, cool" effect. But in reality it isn't all that cool. The bubbles are just sitting there. They do look to flow around the cupholder, but the seat back still in position makes it look dumb.

I can totally appreciate the work it took to make all of those parts, but it looks like something Pimp My Ride would put together. "Hey lets put some lcd's on the mud flaps!"

Do i think it looks cool? Definately... would I want THAT specific set up in my (family's) boat... probably not... but i'm sure it sounds amazing

I think it's cool that these boats are being showcased at these large events like SEMA, this example might be a bit extreme but it shows what could be possible, as well as creating a bigger aftermarket for people that might want to personalize their boats.

I wonder if they intentionally try to place the subs in the most unpractical locations? I could see the installer saying hey let's try to take up all this wasted space in these compartments... While we are at it let's put some big ugly bubbles right in front of the rear pad, this will make it hard for those wakeboarders to get in and out of the boat, ha, ha, ha.

You can hear my boat loud and clear at 40mph from a nearby but I don't have so much waste happening in my boat. There are a few spots that make good sense for woofer placement, like under the dash on the driver's side, maybe under the passenger seat too if you want to give up some space, or building a false seat to enhance the seating arrangement.

Funny to see they used Polk db series speakers in custom painted Monster Tower double bullet cans!

All in all I am pretty underwhelmed by this install, really disappointed that Polk couldn't pull off something more impressive.

I guess we are just spoiled. I stop by SoundIllusionsAudio periodically and chat with Clay. I have also hooked up with guys from a couple other stereo shops around her at different events.

The work they do cannot be compared to this. Like Mikeski points out, they used custom painted off the shelf parts. Problem is, if the local guys had done the install you wouldnt even know what was in it, and Polk would just have decals on the side of a boat. (cause everything is hidden like it should be!)

SEMA stuff is supposed to be RIDICULOUS it is a SHOWCASE. just about 90% of the vehicles at sema are totally impractical, but it allows the consumers to see what is possible. even the "mentally ill" can customize a vehicle to their specifications. i think it was last year, audiobahn had a car that only had one seat in the middle of it, and the steering wheel was a subwoofer......

Saw the boat yesterday at CES and talked to the installer. They only had 3 days to put everything together. Most of the vehicles at the show had a year for their installs. Saw some crazy stuff! The only way they could possibly accomplish the install was to grab off the shelf stuff and make slight modifications. The tower speakers were simply painted, the audioformz sub enclosures had minor fiberglass work to accomodate the need. For what it's worth Polk is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Directed Electronics so Polk is likely to go the same path as A/D/S, Orion, PPI, etc.
