    6.5" speakers recommendation

I'm in the throes of planning spring upgrades and my boat speakers are a weak spot. Right now I'm using Sony XS-1641's but they don't seem to cut it, even through I'm sending them about 55W RMS. I'm open to upgrading my "boat" amp too, if replacement speakers warrant it.

Anyone have recommendations or opinions good sounding 6.5" speakers that'll jam?

I have the Polk db650's on my tower and they are a great speakers. I have the Clarion APX480 amp running them. It's listed at 320 RMS and I'm running them in the 4 channel mode so they are getting 80 watts each RMS.

think I got them for like $70/pair. They seem to be holding up well to the enviroment. I've had them a year and they still look new.

I checked the Polk website and now Polk is pitching them as Car + Marine speakers.

jroyal - are you running at 80 x 4 @ 4 ohms correct? How well can you hear them wakebaording? I am thinking about getting those speakers. -MG

Yes. 80W x 4 @ 4 Ohm. Thought it would be less strain on the amp at 4 ohms.

Yes, I can hear them at 70'. At 75-80', not as well.

I have the Polk db 675's from Audioformz, and they are great. The key is to get a quality amp. I am running a JL Audio 300/2 amplifier to 4- 6.75inch Polks.

I know speakers require power to sound good, but even adequate power won't help crappy speakers. At least that was my experience with the stock Clarions, plus I haven't been too impressed with the Sony's.

My plan is to put together a list of what other folks have had luck with (such as the Polk's) and listen to them at the shop. I'll go with what sounds good and then pick out an amp to make sure they're getting enough juice.

Sometimes you can find the old Pioneer TS A1781s on e-bay for cheap, they are probably the best bang for the buck. Next up would be the Polk db675's, they are a little smoother but not quite as efficient. You can spend a whole bunch more on different speakers but I doubt that they would sound any better. I would suggest running 6 on a tower.

Will the db675's fit in the 6.5" holes inside the boat?

don't want to be late to the party, but we put Diamond 6.5's in our '03 210 and fit nicely. We had to take out the factory cloth grill covers and remove the pvc pipe sections the held the stock speakers in place. We did stretch the vinyl and re-stapled it to shape the larger hole, but that was simple.

Of course if we are going through the trouble, we might as well light 'em up!

                      What I Used

I replaced the interior speakers in my 99 Pro Air with the Polk Momo's. They are rated at 80 rms. I am powering them with the Clarion APX480M 4ch amp which is rated at 80 rms x 4. They scream and sound great. I also removed the factory cloth grill and removed the pvc ring. I used the supplied expansion ring with the speakers to help mount them next to the observers seat. Like mentioned earlier, the restapling of the vinyl is easy just take your time to eliminate any ripples. I attached a picture but it's not a real good one. I don't have any close ups of the speakers installed. Sorry
