infinite baffle

I have a '96 super sport, and I'm thinking of placing a JL infinite baffle sub under the dash. Has anyone tried this? Is a 10" sub enough? I see many people put amps under port side lift up seat. I will have life jackets, towels, etc., will I have cooling issues? Thanks to all.

JL Audio definitely has the best free-air (infinite baffle) subs. A 10-inch will do a good job proivided everything is optimum related to its mounting. While infinite baffle for this 10-inch means an enclosure that is ideally three cubic feet or larger to infinite, the woofer must be acoustically isolated front to rear. So its essential that the mounting surface is well sealed around its entire perimeter. The mounting surface should also be just as rigid as an enclosure would be. This woofer deserves an honest 250 watts at 4-ohms. If you do these things correctly and tune it (crossover & gains) properly (different from a sealed woofer) the JL free-air will reach its potential.

If the above mounting scenario is not manageable in your boat then go the enclosed route.

Sub install underway. I relocated the breaker panel to the port wall of the foot area under the dash. I am hoping to mount the sub to the panel the breaker mounted to and lift it up as high as I can.

I haven't wired it yet but the install went well. I relocated the fuse panel to the left side and used SST 3/8 allens with all SST hardware. I used two rubber grommets one on each side of the wall and enclosure with large washer to spread them out once tight.

Plenty of leg room and and I get all of the locker room back on the port side which is great.

I managed to put a Boston SPG555 in a slot ported 2.0 cubic foot box in that location and mine sits flush. Of course I did cut the fiberglass "flange" out of the front of the footwell and needed to extend the ballast hoses so they could sit flush against the floor clearing the opening for the sub installation. Very happy with the results. I also have two very large amps suspended from aluminum rails above the steering rack. I'll post pictures once I install the trim piece I just picked up from the paint shop.

Here are two pictures. You can see the amps above the steering rack in the first picture this is in front of drivers feet of my 211. The second picture shows the aluminum and steel bars that the amps hang from. The rack bolts to a tower bolt, a seat bolt and through the dash under the instrument cluster in two places. The two main steel rails are bolted to the boat. The aluminum rails are the amp mounting rails. All rails are 1/4 x 1" stock, it is quite stout. Everything is drilled and tapped all hardware is locktited too. The amps cooling fins were drilled and tapped for 8-32 screws that hold the little aluminum angle pieces that hold the amps to the aluminum rail. The amps get air on all sides, if they ever overheat I can add the vent in the stock location for the window defroster and exhaust the hot air out of this space.

Ok JL"s are now in the tower cans(MX650's), The WS420 fit great below the throttle(very happy with that) Sub is in and sounds great. Amps are on plastic now and up on the side wall. Everything matches and sounds awesome!!!
Just need time to get it in the water now and relax.............

I have a JL 500/1 powering a JL 10" W6 under my steering wheel....takes up little space and sounds pretty good
I use a gain control knob to turn it up and down depending on the party Oh this is in a 2000 SAN.
