Installing new Faria Depth Sounder in 96 SSN

Well, my stock depth sounder went out so I decided to replace it with a Faria unit. Got it and installed the guage. Hooked up the black to ground and purple to keyed ignition. Now the problem. The existing sending unit has a black and an orange wire. The transducer wires off the back of the Faria are black, blue and bare. 2 questions:

1) Can i use the existing transducer or do I need to get one specific for the Faria.

2) How do i wire it? Am I correct in wiring the blue to the orange and then pairing the black and bare wires and wiring them to the black?

Thanks in advance...need to know how deep the water is

The Faria transducer is different, you need to change it too. On the positive side the Faria transducer works much better.
