2026 query: best GoPro for a 2020 G23?

Hi all,

I know this has been asked before, but GoPros have advanced with new versions every year. I just got a hero 13 and have buyer's remorse already, since it intends BLE to turn on the the WiFi, so that probably doesn't work.

What's the best GoPro that works reliably with a 2020 G23? Is it the Hero 7?

Honestly, none. First of all, the LINC integration isn't anything special. You can do WAY more with your phone controlling the GoPro. It's been a long time, but I believe the last GoPro that integrated was the Hero 4.

Your best bet is to just use your phone with your Hero 13.

Have never used the feature, well once to set it up. GoPro's and the like are the bomb for the action shots where you don't want to jeopardize your phone. In the water, on the water, or the hard mount action shots. Crew taking phone shots and vids are much more spot on and plentiful. I think I'm in the same wheelhouse with charlesml3, I think I'm running Hero 4's & 5's, have a slew of them, and GoPro phones Apps are pretty amazing. One less screen to mess with on the Linc screen. Fun feature, just don't see the benefit.

The auto start / stop above 8mph sounds awesome though. Maybe I'll see if I can get creative with an android app or raspberry pi.

Wonder if the boat has an easy to reach CAN bus or something to read current speed.

GoPro Labs firmware gives you a lot of bells and whistles, including a mph at which the camera turns on and off. Labs even lets you split them which is nice so we start at above 10mph but stop under 5mph. After you install labs firmware there's a helper app that let's you input the settings you want on your phone. That generates a QR code the gopro scans and sets values with.

That sounds pretty cool! I'll look into it. Do you use it that way?

I do. I just have a qr code saved to my phone as a photo screenshot so I turn the gopro on, aim it at the qr code to load settings, listen for the beep, and mount the gopro wherever it's going. It'll also beep as it starts and stops video recording so you can confirm action. I think the beeping might be adjustable.

That's pretty nuts! I'm also looking to see if I can create a virtual gopro to act as a link between the boat and a newer goprp
