Intrinsically safe heaters are the way to go. I normally keep my Ski Nautique in a heated garage -- however, one year, I purchased a new-to-me Ski Nautique in early December and had no place to store it. The previous owner said that it was winterized, but I'm a "trust, but verify" guy and wasn't about to roll the dice. So, I parked the S.N. on my RV pad and put a bilge heater (400W) in the boat. I propped up the engine cover approx 12" and pointed the warm air flow from the heater directly into the engine compartment. No worries. No freezing problems.
