Should I hear the V-Drive transmission at low RPMs? 2006 Nautique 226 LE

I had a Fresh Air exhaust installed this season, and now it's possible to have a normal conversation at 1500 RPMs. I also can hear what I believe is the transmission at lower RPMs, which may be perfectly normal given its rigid mount to the boat. Should the V drive be quiet as a mouse, or is some noise normal? What I typically hear when in reverse also appears in forward. Once above 1800 RPMs engine compartment noise drowns the trans noise. Could the noise be something other than the transmission? Trans fluid level is fine. Boat has 650 hours and has been very well maintained. This is my 2nd season with an inboard so still learning.

You will definitely hear more vdrive noise/whine with the surf pipe. My 409/230 is drastically quieter with one. The engine noise without it would
    have blocked it all out.
