Hi everyone, have been lurking the forum for years, reading, learning, but now I think I need to post for some advice.
I've been dealing with exhaust risers getting clogged at the inlet hole. I've been able to clear the obstruction when it happens by digging around with a thin screw driver but since the boat is a 1997 I'm thinking that it might be time to replace the water manifolds. The boat was fresh water most of it's life but the last 8 or so we've been in the ocean. The boat has 140 hrs, is garage kept, always engine flushed after use and I put her away shinny after a salt-away bath.
As of last weekend the port header got hot and I knew what was up immediately, the yellow PCM logo melted slightly and the plastic 5.8 ltr cap on the carburetor melted a bit. The 4" connector hose (green stripe) got cooked as well but still seals. So I once again cleared the inlet hole on both headers, replaced all the hoses, replaced the raw water pump (sherwood), and working on getting the thermostat cover unbolted. One bolt is stripped. No worries though, have been down this road before with lots of engines. Did a water test in the driveway and all good.., temp stays at 160ish after lots of revs and long idles.
So here's my questions.
1) when do wet exhaust manifolds and risers need to be replaced ?
2) what is recommended for garage storage in CA over the winter months. I've always kept fresh water in the engine over winter.
Overall the boat runs great and want to keep her rolling !
Thanks !!
