2010 Ski Nautique-Speed problem only during trick runs

Hello fellow water skiers around the world,
I’m a member of the water ski team at Hosei University in Japan.

I have a question about a problem with our boat and would really appreciate any advice.

When we do tricks, we often have trouble with the boat speed. The symptoms are: when the water surface is calm, the boat runs exactly at the set speed. However, if the water gets a little rough, the boat fails to hold the speed and often accelerates way beyond the set point. This does not happen in slalom or jump – in those cases, the boat runs exactly at the set speed without any issues.

Has anyone experienced this or know what might be causing it?
Our boat is a 2010 Ski Nautique. It has an EX343 engine (2010 model) and uses Zero Off speed control.

Thanks a lot for your help!

Does your Zero Off system have the old or new GPS pucks? If still on the old pucks, research the associated problems and see if they match what you describe.

1997 Masters Edition Nautique - Zephyr Green - gone (amazing ski wake)
1982 Mastercraft Powerslot - gone (a primitive but wonderful beast)

Thank you all for your wonderful and insightful responses. I truly admire and sincerely appreciate everyone here — your knowledge and support mean a lot to us.

Thanks to your help, we were able to understand the system better and, although our solution isn’t perfect, we’ve managed to temporarily resolve the issue.

Let me explain what happened to us.
About a year ago, some of our university students replaced one of the GPS antennas. It turns out that this replacement was likely causing the malfunction. As you know, there are two antennas. We test-ran the boat while unplugging each antenna one at a time. When we disconnected one specific antenna, the boat was finally able to maintain a stable speed without sudden acceleration or deceleration.

At the moment, we’re only running with one functioning antenna, which means the GPS signal coverage is about half of what it should be. Still, it’s good enough for us to continue training.

This is only a temporary workaround, but we plan to try a software update when we have time.
