Water Pump Belt broke, replaced, now wont start :( was fine before

1995 Sport Nautique, 5.8 gt40

Ill give the run down. Yesterday we went for a morning run and everything was fine. We were going home and I was going around 25-30mph burning old gas out. Heard a thud, didnt know if it was in the water etc, temp gauge went to 200 so I shutdown. Opened cover and saw water pump belt in the bottom. Called BIL and towed to dock. I replaced the belt. Now when I hit the key I get a loud Clank but no turnover. It sounds like the starter engages/hits but engine wont turn. I ran maybe 30 seconds after the thud. The light came on when I shutdown. I have had the boat 2 years and everything has been great. Always started and Oil changes and battery charged, been great. Nothing has been needed. I replaced both belts with PCM Belts. Im freaking out.

Sometimes when GT-40 engines get really hot, they suck water in through the exhaust and water gets into the cylinders.

Pull the spark plugs, get the water out of the cylinders, change the oil, and start her up.

Don't keep trying to crank it until you get the water out.

I would also be concerned with a hydrolock scenario. I would pull all plugs and see if you can turn the motor over easily by hand (socket on the crankshaft bolt). If it turns over easy then I would try engauging starter and see how it spins - and hopefully no bad noises. Any sign of water in the oil on dipstick?? Then the ooil change as Jeff suggests.

The dipstick looks good, only a couple hours on this oil. Ill get a change ready. I hope to pull the plugs today or tomorrow and check. I have never turned an engine by hand but have everything needed. I can change parts etc but am amateur mechanic. My local come to you boat guy is booked up currently but on the list. I can tow to marina and load if needed. Thank you guys, Ill let you know what I find. I appreciate your time and help

You don't need to turn it by hand, but if you use the starter, be ready for oily water to spray everywhere. Do something to contain it or it will ruin your carpet. Old towels or an old blanket over the open spark plug holes works pretty well. Try to direct the water into the bilge.

Just a thought - how about using a shop vac with a suitable clear plastic host to suck out the cylinders before turning over? You would have a good idea what's in there and less messy when you spin the starter.

You guys are awesome! I pulled the plugs, water came out of 1 hole. I covered and cranked and got the water out! I tried a vac and small line but but didnā€™t get anywhere, I had some fridge water line on a small shop vac. Iā€™m ready to put it back together. Do I need to spray fogging oil in cylinders? I have some for when I winterize the old 40hp mercury. I kept everything in order.
Should I crank more to be sure of water? I did several times til no more. Or wait a bit for evaporation? Thank you!!!!

So, all back together and turning over but wont fire up. It sounds close to starting but doesnt quite make it. I took the plugs out again and cranked a few more time then replaced. It wants to start but doesnt make it. Im letting it sit for now in case I flooded it.

Are you sure you didn't swap any plug wires by accident? If two wire are swapped it'll sound like it wants to run but can't get going.

Im not 100 that I didnt mix up a wire. I was very careful though. The wires are the length that I wouldnt think I could mix them up. Ill look for a wire guide here and check that too. Thanks

Just curious how many hours on this motor?

Ill have to double check to be exact but its about 745 hours. I cant find a wire diagram yet :/
The wires were marked at the distributor, I just need to be able to trace them in the daylight. Ill be back at it tomorrow morning.
It been a week, last week I had to put a solenoid on the old Merc 40 on the toon and today the Sea doo spark had Hi exhaust temp warning, I think a plastic grocery bag got onto the bottom! I got it cleaned and working though. These dang Gremlins!!!

It Is Alive!!! I traced the wires and they were all correct. It took some cranks and I had to move the throttle but she hit and was purring like before! Iā€™m letting it rest and then another oil check then a trip out (once I know someone is around if I need a tow). Thank you fellas!!

I finally got the old gal out again today, started up no trouble, idle was good, only ran out a bit but got up to temp and everything looked good. I think my starting trouble was from the fogging oil but totally worth it to treat the cylinders. Oil on dipstick looks good, I m fairly sure the water only came in after I saw the temp hit 200 and shut down right away. Thank you guys for responding and helping me, I really do appreciate it.
