Repair of FARIA Gateway Box. YES We've got a solution!

Hello All, At the last trip of the season We were confronted with dead gauges on my 210 2006 SAN. The engine was still running but all the gauges were dead. Also the LCD's were gone. I was searching on the internet and found a company in New Zealand that did such a repair in the past.... I live in The Netherlands, Europe and New Zealand and for me New Zealdn is really at the other side of the world.... So I mailed and called a couple of times and I had the trust that they could fix it. AND I WAS CORRECT.

I installed back the Faria gateway, the gauges and everything is back. ALL gauges are working and the LCD's are also working. Even the enginer hours were back. SO if you have a problem with your Faria gateway and you want to keep your boat original you can use my advice: Get Electronic Get Electronic – Get Electronic NZ

Wow. This could be a game changer. I wonder how much they charge for the repair.

It was cheaper then buying new analog gauges. Leadtime was around 6 weeks including transport. They have documented this repair so they probably are faster then the first two. This was the second faria repair for them. But please be careful with the tax. You have to mention on the package that it is a repair item

Get Electronics took off the rings but completely assembled it nice. I can not see any damages at the ring when it is mounted.

Wow. Pretty big news! Can you be clear on what exactly they fixed for you?

I see mention of both the gateway box and dash gauges. Did they do just one or both?

Also, I see you mention this being their second Faria repair - was that for someone else or also for you?

Hi SilentSeven, I’ve found this address because they had a picture of a faria box from a previous repair. So it was the first repair for me. I’m not sure how and what they exactly repaired. Nothing was working and I send the complete set to them. I assume it was the fariabox because all the gauges were suddenly down. But the also took care of the lcd display.

I can tell you from experience that the Faria gateway is a really complex box. Without schematics or direct support from Faria I doubt they really "repaired" it. Possibly replaced a bunch of electrolytic caps if it was truly "dead". I had another guy talk with me about the same exact symptoms (all gauges suddenly went dead). After a lot of remote debug turned out to be the cable/connector that runs from P3 on the gateway to the first Faria gauge, the dreaded Faria serial bus. I simply built him a new cable and boom, everything worked.

No doubt these guys know what they are doing, but before sending a gateway and 6 gauges to them I would do a LOT of debug. If the gauges just suddenly go dead but the engine/boat still runs I would suspect connectors first. Pull them off the gateway and re-seat them a few times. Clean off the pins, etc. If a gauge or 2 is out it's generally NOT the gateway but simply a gauge or 2 is bad. That's what the picture shows. I've repaired ~70 of them with pretty much 100% success. However, as folks will attest I pretty much mangle the back of the bezel that is not in view. If these guys have a machine that can remove/replace the bezel cleanly I'm interested in that part of it....

Hi Techbeer, Thanks for your info. And yes we first invetigated all the plugs several times, cleaned them, Used cleaner, used air, used a multimeter. On we measured the voltage that was described in the Faria manual (I do not recall it out of my head). We checked the cabling but we were out of ideas... I used a specialist who had Canbus experience etc etc. So for us it was also a bit of a gamble to send this to the other side of the world... The only thing I have experienced that all gauges are back working again. And that was impossible without their help. Maybe you can have a chat with David about the Bezel. Mention my name and he will help you.

Hi ederaaff210, that is great news. I have a couple of gateways in my lab, one that is older pitot tube based and another that uses the paddlewheel input. They are very similar and are based on a large Microchip MCU. The pitot tube based one would be hard to recover if there was water ingress, which is the primary failure point. But in both cases there are several large electrolytic capacitors which likely also would fail over time. I suspect that they took the gateway apart, replaced these caps, and it came back to life. The hardest part in that procedure is getting the gateway open. I had a devil of a time with an older pitot tube based one. But your picture above shows a speedometer. I have repaired a bunch of those and have a YouTube showing the procedure for the smaller gauges. Not a big deal. At some point I'll produce another video on the larger gauges. But it sounds like they must have done "something" to the gateway as well.

I poked around their website and it's clear they are focused more on automotive instrumentation, which obviously would translate to the marine world. But there is no mention that I could find of repairing marine gauges or gateways. Seems like they should advertise that as well.
