My 196 EFI GT 40 has been acting up after a set or running for a few minutes. It has just less than 800 hrs. I have replaced the fuel cell and done all the regular maintenance- it was running great until about a month ago.. It starts and idles fine but after a set or when taking a break, the check engine light comes on and the engine almost seems to go to limp mode. Once I rev it or run it slowly the light goes off and it runs fine. Once the light is off it runs great= no missing or anything. I think it is the fuel pressure regulator because it seems like once fuel pressure is built back up to runs great. Any thoughts before I go on a part swap adventure? Thanks.

Don’t rule out the oil pressure sender. That would likely be the issue before the fuel pressure. I believe that is the one that sends it into limp mode first. I just recently replaced mine because it was leaking. Found one on Amazon and quick replacement. <$20

Hey Shag, the oil pressure gauge has been erratic and sometimes needs a tap on the dash to read correctly. So it sounds like the oil sending unit is the problem. This should be an easy swap out and the part isn't expensive. Thanks to you and Beamons for the input.
