    Alternator voltmeter wiring help

Thanks in advance for any insight
I have looked at every schematic that can be found, and cannot figure this out.

1979 nautique converted from points to electric ignition.
    new starter with attached solenoid
ballast resistor no longer needed and removed.
new engine boat and dash harnesses,
    new gauges.

The new starter comes with instructions and wires to splice it into the original harness which is long gone and was hacked/spliced from dash thru engine.
the new harnessess do not have a 10g gauge orange wire the schematic calls for, in fact i have never seen 3 10g gauge wires on a volt meter like the schematic in the calls for.
totally at wits end between the voltmeter alternator circuit breaker and how to wire this up safely and correctly.

in the above schematic the wiring does not match the drawing below of the wiring as it was on the engine.
Bottom middle of below pic where orange and red are spliced was melted.

Am I missing something? I think a voltmeter is a simple wire-up. You connect the + to any 12v hot wire in the system and the - to a system ground. The gauge reports the volts observed in the circuit at that point. I'm not aware of having to tap the meter at a specific location.

IIR, an Amp-meter is more complicated as it reports the charging output. Is that what you're adding?

The original Ammeter is in series with the charging circuit. A new volt meter should be in parallel with the output of the alternator (after the voltage regulator). The regulator could be external if original or internal if it is a new alternator.

I appreciate that, but i have a hard time with start-run-charge because i don't understand the terminology and it can be wired different ways/routes.
schematics don't look like flow charts ie cooling, hydraulic, oiling and so on, 12 volt schematics look like direct shorts and jumping/by passing and T-ing don't make sense to me.

Accessories like the pumps blowers gauges and the like are plain as day.

i got big help and now have start run and charge figured out with no ballast resistor, no remote solenoid and no T-ing, jumping, splicing or using what ever color wire is available in the original wire harness.
As i understand it, the old charging circuit went up to the voltmeter to the key and then back, add in all the cut spliced jumped melted wires and wires that went nowhere rats nest from dash to engine because big jimbo wired it to work i was ready to throw in the towel.
the older ski boat schematic and newer electric ignition schematic did not match what was on the engine

this is points converted to electric with new gauges new starter(solenoid attached) and new wiring harness that again i couldn't have gotten without help.
start run charge, also have behind dash and whole boat overview. The over view will get re drawn cleaned up and they all get saved in an envelope with the manuals templates receipts etc etc.
