Neutral switch, what am I missing

Wondering what I am missing. Tried pushing the neutral button next to the throttle while engaging the throttle to run up engine RPM's and I cannot get the boat into neutral. The transmission engages every time. Am I missing something?

OK, I'm not trying to be insulting but you have to hold that button down and then engage the throttle.

If you're doing that, then it isn't working correctly. May not even be connected. I don't remember the last time I used it on any of my boats.

Not being insulting at all. That is what I figured and was doing but did does does engage neutral. Guess I will add it to the list of items to be looked at next time it is in for service.
