  • Adding options to a 2018 boat

Should I expect to pay more than retail price (line item pricing on the sticker, MSRP) to add certain options to a boat that I recently purchased? For example: paying above the retail price for bow cushion, sun pad filler cushion, phender pro, swim ladder off of the swim platform, Pro ballast bags.? All installed by a dealer. This would be for a 2018 SAN.

Are you talking about added labor to install the ladder?

Is the labor rate higher to install these items at the dealership versus having them done at the factory before the boat is delivered. For an add-on item like a ladder, if it came from the factory on the boat might be $400. Would I expect to pay that much if I brought my boat to the dealer to have the ladder added. Parts and labor. Or would it be more expensive?

It depends. For options like the ladder it should be the same because it's the same amount of time to install it. Now things like a heater are more expensive to do after. The heater installation at the factory takes place before the top deck is joined to the hull. This means it doesn't take nearly as much time to run the hoses, install the core, warm tubes, etc.

When you get quotes, ask for itemized costs on labor and materials. Some forum members here have purchased from the companies that advertise on this forum at a lower cost, and then they had the parts installed locally, saving money overall. Good luck!

Bow filler and sunpad filler - definitely not. All they have to do is send the specs to the factory and have it made, you're buying a 150K boat they can eat the shipping.
The swim ladder can be purchased from Nautique Parts for 260 and on Amazon for 147. About an hour of labor, it took me maybe 30 - 45 minutes to remove the platform, measure, install and reinstall the platform.
The Phender pro is a little more difficult unless they have the retrofit tool that allows the nut to be inserted from above https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7sw5XEBDAA otherwise they have to gain access from below.
I have no idea about the Pro Ballast.
Either way I'd make it a deal breaker if they tried to overcharge.
