Heater vent/register won't close properly with solution.

    Gang,

One of my heater vents wouldn't close properly. It was kinda jammed and would always stay open a bit. I finally got around to digging into it and here's what I found.

First, these are very easy to remove. Basically, you just grab it on the outside and give it a tug. It'll slide right out.

Once it was out, the problem was obvious. The entire thing is made up of molded plastic parts. There's the outside housing, two flaps, and a link that connects the two flaps together. All of the moving parts snap together.

In my case, one of the vent flaps had popped out of the hold in the side of the housing. Here's how I went about resolving it.

    1) After pulling the vent/register off, carefully remove the connecting link that ties the two flaps together.

    2) Take the flap out that's causing the problem.

    3) Carefully observe the housing and how the flaps fit in. The sides are not identical. On one side, there will be a hole for the pin to go in. On the other side there will be a slit for that side to go in.

    4) Reinstall the flap starting with the pin going into the hole, Then on the other side, slide the flap into the slot.

    5) Reinstall the connecting link.

    6) Replace the vent/register in the boat.
