Bad day. Have had my 1996 Nautique with the the GT-40 Pro Boss engine for a few years. Only 550 hours. Love it!!!! Teenage son was driving boat and didn't notice excessive exhaust and sluggish performance. Drove another 4 hours over 2 weeks. I drove the boat this weekend and started to hear a ticking (lifter sound) from the engine. Shut it down. Pulled the dip stick and found the ugliest yellow/cream colored oil on the stick. 1 inch higher than full mark. I didn't see any difference from normal in my oil pressure or engine temp gauges. No visable leaking from block. Very clean. Called Auto/Marine mechanic. Didn't help my day. Pretty much said, your gonna be buying a new engine and plan on spending $6 - 8K to replace. He thought is could be a head gasket or bearing. Thought bearing more than gasket. He said he could listen to it and pretty much confirm within a couple minutes of listening. Still runs. Hard to justify spending $8K on a $10K boat. Just kills me. Any hope that it is not a total loss? Is this a good price for replacement? Please help. Can't bear to think my skiing days are over for awhile!!!

There are several ways water could get in the oil and they don't all mean the motor is toast. I would not run it anymore until you figure out what is wrong and flush out the bad oil. Are you or your son handy or mechanical??
