sputtering GT40

i have a 2001 ski nautique 196 with relatively low hours (340)...encountering a "sputtering" sensation yesterday when accelerating the throttle...starts, idles, and operates in slow speeds but once I "jump" the throttle, it "sputters"...any thoughts and/or direction would be greatly appreciated?

First thing to check:

The distributor cap. Take it off and look at the tabs inside. I bet they're all pitted and corroded. If they look rough, go ahead and replace both the cap and rotor at once. Not a bad idea to go ahead and replace the plug wires and plugs at the same time. They're not terribly expensive.

You might clean the air strainer and check for water in the fuel system water catch (easy and free to do). It sounds most like lack of fuel which could get into needing guages to test pressure to see if you need to replace parts.

thanks...fully agree and was looking to perform exactly that prior to kickoff of the 2015 season...do you by chance know as to whether or not a faulty cap, rotor, wires or plug would the "check engine" light to come and stay on?

May be possible if lean fuel mixture sends a check engine code. That would really need to be hooked up to a code reader.

Only 2 things cause the check engine light to come on on a GT40. A temp switch and oil pressure switch. Both can trigger the CEL and SLOW mode where the boat will not rev past 2700rpm.

Just had the same problem and I replaced a lot in order to find the problem. It ended up being a combination of the alternator and fuel filter. The fuel filter was the main culprit as it still sputtered a little after I replaced the alternator. Your motor is a little different than mine as I have the pro boss. Check anti siphon valve and fuel filter .. 2 cheapest parts to replace.
