Is the gas tank in a 1990 Ski Nautique plastic?

...also curious how hard it is to get to - is it accessible by removing the back seat?

    TIA,

    Justin

It's aluminum, and it's easy to get to.

        M3Fan,

Not sure of the exact build date, but my 90 has a brownish colored plastic tank. Is it possible that CC change materials during the model year? Or maybe my tank was replaced with an aftermarket tank?

        JustinB,
No matter what the material the tank is made of, it should be very easy to get to after removing the rear seat.

Thank you to all who share your knowledge by posting on this site! You guys have helped me alot with the maintenance of my boat

The base of the seat should have two retaining clips inside the base. Simply pop the clips and lift the seat out. The back of the seat just lifts straight out. There are tow or three brackets that it slids back over when you putthe seat pack. There should be a piece of carpeted light weight board hiding the gas tank and other stuff that is under the stern. This piece just pops out. You will now have full access to your gas tank. Should not take but 5 minutes to gain access. BKH

BKH, the 1990 seat all comes out in one piece like a loveseat.

I'm not sure when they switched to plastic, but my early build date 1990 had an aluminum tank.

The tank in my 1990 is indeed plastic. The reason I was asking about how accessible it was and what it was made of was because at the time I was considering the purchase of this boat but had some concerns. It ran great, but would die after running under load for a couple of minutes. I pulled the fuel filter/water separator and it had a considerable amount of water in it. I replaced the filter and experienced the issue again...I pulled the filter and it had significant water in it.

I ended up buying the boat feeling confident that it was an issue with water in the gas tank (the boat had sat unused for a couple of years). Yesterday I siphoned out the full tank of gas, and then removed the tank so I could be certain that I had got every drop out. There was a considerable amount of water in the tank so I've left it out of the boat over night and will let the warm air remove the remaining droplets of water before putting the tank back in.

Thanks again to everyone for the assist.

When you fill it back up get a pint bottle of 99% alcohol from the drug store and add it. It will absorb any remaining water and its alot less expensive than gas Dryer at the auto shop. I know some are going to say don't put alcohol into the gas. However 16oz in 29 Gallons is a pittance and will attract any residual moisture.

I say don't do this ....especially if your area is running E10 gasoline.

If you do get the drug store variety, get the 93 or 97 % stuff. If you get the more common 50% variety you'll be adding 8 ounces of water which is several times more than the residue in an empty tank.

Definitely a mid-year switch. My '90 is aluminum, my uncles '90 is plastic.

In 1990 they had a recall on some of the ski nautique's switching from a aluminum tank to a plastic tank.

My 90 was aluminum. In 1997. the tube stem for the fuel feed from the top broke off and was rolling around in the bottom of the tank. I replaced with a plastic one. Never had another problem, but never let the tank get low as I was concerned that the plastic one curved and therefore would not be at the bottom.
