Throttle In Forward Position to Start Boat???

Having what seems to be an issue with the throttle on my 196. To start this boat I have to move the throttle forward from the lockout position. When I put it back in the lockout position it goes in reverse. This is extremely unsafe and doesn't appear to be correct. Any ideas how to fix?

Put the lever in the position required to start engine. Mark the position. Move lever as necessary to remove set screw on bottom of handle. Put lever back into position required to start boat. Pull lever off and reposition straight up. Tighten set screw. Test.

Check throttle cable adjustment by placing lever in forward gear detent. Remove throttle cable from throttle plate. Adjust throttle plate end of cable so it attached to throttle plate arm without having to move either.

Do NOT operate boat with throttle lever currently adjusted as indicated...it is EXTREMELY unsafe.

Thanks David! From your instruction that was a super easy fix. I took it off to put in the Alpine head unit and Polk speaker and apparently moved the gear in the process. Scared the **** out of me starting it up in what I thought was forward only to put it into neutral and get reverse....Thanks again.
