Hey I just wanted to say thanks to everyone that gave advice for my Gell repair job.

How come you have to upload your pick's backward's You have to load your finished picks first and then the pick has to be the pick you started with seem's kind of retarded.

Yea i have some tip's.

There are 2 types of repair's ones that are pretty deep and require the full repair process
the 2nd type are repairs that seem just a bit deeper than would normaly sand out. Like a deep scratch that your afraid you might sand threw your gell.

With small chips and scratches apply the gell. Then try to leave the gell as smooth and remove as much as you can that way you dont have to use a grit that will leave deep scratches in your surrounding gell.

Example typical repair's
220.400,600,800,1000,1500 compound,finess it, glaze,wax

220 and 400 remove lots of gell pretty quick. If the repair has lots of extra gell on it and its not smooth you need these grits.
But if you have some skills you can apply the gell in the correct amount and not have alot of extra gell to sand and start with a higher grit like 600. and keep the repair aera small.

on small repairs DONT use a large sanding block. Get a small flat block of wood. Stick your sanding paper to the small block and work the aera.

Your repair aera spreads out as you go higher in grits. Example: you start out with a 1 inch by 1 inch repair aera. Your first grit dont make the sand scratches larger than 1-1/2 inch by 1-1/2 inch square. Then with the next grit make the sanding aera 2 inches by 2 inches. That way you are over lapping the sanding aera.

You don't have to make the repair aera perfictly FLAT with the first or second grit. 220 400 600 and even 800 all remove material. So if you make the repair 100% flat with the first grit by the time your get to 800 you might have a hole or a wave in the finish. OOOO No are you getting scaird. Is this to much information. Start in a aera that is hard to see. Lean how to do it on these aera's DONT do your whole boat untill you know what your doing. Its pretty easy Once you have done a few spot's. I found a bunch of small chips on the bottom of the boat that Im gonna fix with a simple clean out the chip with acetone and smooth some gell in the chip and polish it by hand. Would I do this method on the deck mabey not but on the bottom of the boat that no one see's
or a aera thats hard to get to? Sure its gonna look alot better than the chip.


I cut out a section of the passenger side fiberglass to make a sub vent. This section would make a perfict practice piece. Find a section of your boat that you either have laying around as scrap that you can drill a hole in or scratch and then work on that aera.

I just finished my repair using a similar method and the spectrum kit. I was very impressed with the results.

Does anybody know if Correct Craft has altered the "Patriot Red" color any? According to Spectrums website, they only list it through 2006, but I have a 2008. Spectrum customer service has no clue. I'm probablly just gonna gamble that they haven't. Also, the newer gel colors have an "ASH LVOC" listed after them. Any idea what that means?

According to Spectrum Customer Service:

Ash stands for Ashland the maker and LVOC is for low velocity organic compound.

Any issues with using this vs. regular Silver Cloud?

Still no word about the Patriot Red usage past '06...

LVOC is for low velocity organic compound....

volatile...not velocity

LVOC indicates there is a reduced amount of nasty stuff evaporating during the cure.

I have patched some holes from an old tower before with spectrum and I had two problems. Small little air holes when the gel dried and some shrinkage from the edge of the hole.
Did you have these problems and if not how did you prevent them?

Search this site for gel repair and tape. There are suggestions to cover the repair with tape even though it is not supposed be required for the small patch kit recipe.
