1998 Air Nautique PCM 5.8 HO - Carburetor Issues?

I'm having serious issues with my 1998 Air Nautique. It has the following symptoms:

    1. It sometimes (not always) takes a good minute of cranking before it will turn over.
    2. Once started, it idles at very low rpms (400 or so), and then ends up dying if I don't continue to rev it in neutral.
    3. When I rev it, un-used gas ends up coming out the exhaust into the water.
    4. It has very little power out of the hull, but then it gets going and does fine at high speeds.

My mechanic looked at it and thought it had water in the gas, but I've replaced the fuel seperator and even emptied it several times. I'm thinking I have issues with the carburetor. Any thoughts on what I need to do?

Might be time for a rebuild. If you suspect you have had water in the system, you should pull to fuel bowels off each end to make sure they do not have water in them. Be carefull with the fuel in them.

      1998 5.8 should be fuel injected---no carb

Definitely has a carb. I think that EFI was still optional that year.
