I am buying a boat with a FCT on it, and it is a 500 mile tow back to home. So, should I fold it down and pad the places it touches the hull or whatever it touches, or should I keep it up?

Keep it up. CC recommends towing with it down, but nobody does it, and I would think it would cause more damage in the down position. I have towed several boats thousands of miles with the towers up. The only time I have ever towed with the tower down is when I picked up a boat at the factory and it was shrink wrapped with the tower down.I own and operate Silver Cove Marine, which is an inboard boat restoration, service, and sales facility located in Mooresville, North Carolina. RE: Newbie to towers towing question
I have taken a couple long trips and always towed tower up. Remove any lights/speakers/Bimini's/etc. that you can easily enough then wrap the tower in Saran Wrap otherwise plan on spending some time scrubbing the bugs off when you get home. It's also a good idea to take a measurement of the height to the top of the tower on the trailer as a reference should you come across any low bridges or similar and most importantly remember to lower the tower before backing in your garage at home.
