good deals are out there for a 2001. I got in mine for cheap and then totally redid everthing, interior, exterior, tower, and major tune up all for under $6500. As long as you do an indepth inspection of the boat before you buy it there is no risk. THe 2001 hulls sell themselves.....

What exactly does the gear reduction tranny do?

I assume they re-positioned the motor more flat to keep oil in the front cylinders, esp while getting the boat on plane. I know they plane out in seconds but thats the only solid reason I could come up with.

So far, Im leaning towards either the '89 or the '93 as it seems they've made substantial improvements in those years. Of coarse if someone has already competently re-finished another year then it will definately get considered.

I may not have the time (with playing tournament golf and having two small kids, working full time .... yeah, life happens ) to take on the huge undertaking of re-building a 2001. I think I'd enjoy it but find me another 12 hrs a day and I'm in.

The gear reduction tranny allows the motor to turn a higher RPM coming out of the hole. More RPM = more power, so you get a better holeshot. The down angle was just a nice feature built into the PCM 1.23, it doesnt affect performance. Like you guessed, it probably had more to do with fluid control and motorbox height.

          tourpro,

Where are you located at? If you are anywhere near central IL, I would be willing to take you out in my 89 to let you try the wake first-hand. It would give you a good idea what any 2001 wake would be like.

I wish I could take you up on that offer. I live in Ontario, Canada. It's a mere 10 hr drive to Springfield from here. I just Mapquested it.

This is all part of the reason I'm doing so much research ahead of time. There isn't nearly as much selection of used Nautiques here so I'll likely end up buying one from the US market and bringing it back.

So next spring when I run down to buy one I'm hoping to have possibly created a contact or two to scout out the craft first hand for me. and save me driving accross 3 states looking at a handful of boats.

no go on 90 or newer

The 90's era SN has a wider beam and is a bit longer. However, I hve owned the following boats:

'86 2001 (My favorite boat of all time since it was my first as a kid)

'88 Barefoot Nautique (my second favorite boat)

              '91 Barefoot Natique

              '92 Ski Naut.

              '93 Ski Naut.

              '93 Sport Naut.

              '90 American Skier Volante

              '89 American Skier

              '89 Ski Brendella

              '90 Ski Supreme

              '88 Ski Centurion Barefoot Warrior

My point being, I've been in and owned most old school ski boats and let me tell you, if you are looking for a old boat to retro fit into a great wakeboard boat, you are making a HUGE mistake if you don't purchase a '89 2001 Nautique; 90 Barefoot Nautique; or maybe a '91 Barefoot Nautique or '91 Excel.

After the hull change in '90 the SN was greatly underpowered unless equiped with the Pro Boss, not to mention, you need to weight the **** out of them to get any type of decent wake.

the pre excel hull barefoot nautique, and the martinique throw nice wakes with no weight and only get better with weight. they handle similiar to an inboard outboard though due to the deep vee hull design, but it will still turn around more than tight enough to ski in rivers ect... basically it wont powerslide.

So, tourpro, how come you are using my boat pic as "your" pic under your sign-on?! I am taking this as a big compliment, as I am proud of our boat too!

Umm... I didnt know it was yours. I never claimed to have owned one at all, much less yours. And I like yours a lot.

I really love the '93 SN esp because theres no wood in the boat but .... it sounds to me like my search is for an '89 SN.

At least I got THAT much figured out now.

there is no reason to just look at an 89. 86 and after the interior greatly improved. my 88 has duel exhaust sounds great and with a acme 542 will pull like crazy weighted out.also has the same interior, except my motorbox is smaller. im not to crazy about the 88 windshield.

I thought the interior changed in '88. I have seen some '86s with nicer interior but thought it had been replaced.

Have some or all '86's come with the same int as the '88's ??

Im going to have to go ahead and disagree with you there. My uncle had a 240hp '90, my dad had a 255hp '92 and my '90 was originally 240hp. Any one of those boats was quicker out of the hole and at least as fast on top as our previous '88. The newer hull design seems to be much more efficient and comes out of the water with no bowrise, and the weight is about the same as the older hull. I love the 2001's, and ski behind a few on a regular basis- but for anything but hardcore wakeboarding, the 90+ hull is simply better.

I believe the delux interior was standard starting in '86. It was available in '85, and possibly '84. The 1.23 tranny that debuted in '89 is nice, but i wouldnt rule out any clean 2001 if thats what youre after. The dash on all 87-89 boats are nice though- all the gauges (especially the tach) are much more visible. My personal favorites are the 87-88 boats- I love those split windshields.
