How much garage would I need?

Still eyeing 2006 and newer 196s. From my brochure, I see that the newer 196s are 19’ 5.25” without the platform. Can any 196 owners with folding tongue trailers tell me if I can reasonably expect to get a 196 in my 20' garage if I remove the platform and fold the tongue? Going diagonal is an option and would not require that I remove the platform, but I was wondering if I might be able to get it in straight. I suppose, to a certain extent, it will depend on the trailer manufacturer.

If you take the platform off and are cuttng it close, don't forget about the speedos sticking out the back. At least mine stick out about four inches, and I don't think they are included in the 19' 5.25" measurment.

I have a 2006 206. The brochure states the boat, without the platform, is 20' 7.5" and I have exactly 21' front to back in my garage. My boat is on a Ramline single axle trailer with a tongue that actually folds slightly behind the front of the boat after you pull a few pins (the folding pin, shown in the picture, has an orange handle). I can therefore get the boat in front to back with a few inches to spare. And I have the hydrogate on the back, too.

I have yet to attach anything to my posts, but will try to do so with a few photos of the space. But to answer your question, if you get a boat with a Ramline that folds behind the nose of the boat you can get the space you need to store the boat down to the exact lengh of the boat (or really close) without the platform as listed in the materials.

Ingognito: I can't help you on length, cuz I have a 45 feet deep garage and can back in my 206 on a trailer and leave it hooked up to my suburban and still close the door with a foot to spare. That's nice... But, I'm a newbie here with a 206 just a month ago and the boat is completely SWEEEET! I looked at older stuff and decided to go new. If you do a 196 or 206, you won't regret it. My Prestige trailer also bends to be shorter than the nose of the boat, so a 196 should fit with a few inches to spare.

I would say it won't fit straight in. Have you measured the clearance yet? If it's a standard 20' garage pad you need to minus off of that the back wall and the garage door sticking inside. It would be down to about 19' 6". If mathews01 has a 21' and has that little clearance there's no way you will fit that boat straight in on a 20'.

I put my 1998 SN in a 20 Ft garage. A lot depends upon the trailer. Make sure you get one whose tongue folds back shorter than or equal to the boat. I could bareley fit it in. I did end cutting a hole in the sheetrock for the pitots after I snapped one off. Never had any trouble after that. Now, a 28 ft deep garage and a 10 ft garage door. A terrific thing. BKH

incognito- be certain to measure your width of your garage door too. sounds rediculous, but I had a buddy who bought a nautique, had just enough room to spare in the depth, but forgot to think about the 8' wide single garage door. didn't work. my 196 has a swing away, but it is ahead of the vertical post for the winch. with a 22' deep garage, i still have to have it in at a slight angle, w/o platform and with the swing away. good luck

Thanks, Todd. Plenty of width as I have a single door on a two car (one boat) garage. The cars have to fend for themselves. Good info all the same. I keep wondering what else I should be thinking about.

If you have a double garage you should have no problem. Just angle it in. I had to angle my 211. I attached a piece of 1/4" foam to the wall so I could push corner rub rail right up against it. Talk about a tight fit.
