School me on G21 tweaks and changes.

Well, finally time to upgrade to something bit more surfable for the family as everyone except myself has officially dropped wakeboarding and really progressed on surf side pretty much outriding the current wave. I kinda stopped following all the new Models in super detail in the 2013-2019 era as had some different priorities ……Test drove handful of boats to narrow some things down. BU 22MXZ , Bu 23LSV or MC XT22 XT23 as I still primarily wakeboard . Centurion is on the high list ( used to be rep ) but. Zero availability in Midwest. Bow rise in the MC and the MXZ were like a shuttle launch at surf speeds . Was really honed in on 230 , but the G21 wakeboard wake takes it and I’m still wakeboarding 80% of my water time. Bu 23LSV is still on table. I haven’t surfed a g21 in while in deep water but all things point to the g 21 having better surf wave than the 230 unless you’re really stuffing the 230 to max . See no reason for me to be 230 because our crew is 6 at most , 2-4 consistently so g21 out of box and ease of setup whole retaining all storage is really appealing. And g21 will handle chop just as good on bigger lake. A G23 is just too much to haul around. I’m in price range of 14’’s -20’s I know the G23 had little hull tweak 16 but I don’t recall if there was any change to g21. The spray spray off the bow area on windy days was little issue , and I can’t recall if they ever made a tweak to address that. 16 iI believe is also went to the rotary dial instead of having to reach for Linc menu , which is huge plus for adjustments. But that’s pretty much all the things I’m aware of. Any big tower height changes ? Any NSS plate changes in that era ? With 2:1 tranny seem like base engine seems plenty according to most I can find.

As always thanks for any comments/input

    Happy to hear you’re upgrading!

The G21 never got the 2016 G23’s hull tweak; it’s the same from 2014 through 2020. The bow is still the wet seats at surf speed, especially into the wind. Keep a coat of wax on the windscreen. 2014 started with LINC, then there was a one-off LINC Touch in 2016. 2016 upgraded from ballast puppies to ballast kings - fill/empty time went from 13 to about 9 minutes. LINC Panoray came in 2017. 2017 also got JL speakers, but retained a Polk head unit. Lots of people complain about the Polk/LINC interface on those. There is a JL retrofit kit for 2017’s that would be well within your capabilities based on your other posts here. There’s a writeup on here somewhere. It went all JL in 2018. My boat has the upgraded JL stereo, whatever it’s called, and while I’m not a stereo guy, it sounds SO much better than the Polk in my 2014. You can identify the upgraded stereo by the presence of tweeters up under the windscreen forward of the glove box and helm display. The tower got a bit taller in 2016(?) and again in 2017 or 2018. By 2018 it was about 6” taller than the original tower. 2017 had an optional transom area awareness camera, and it came standard in 2018. It sounds stupid, but it’s *really* nice when you’re spending the day teaching a bunch of people to surf because the gunwales are so tall. 2019 had the power tower standard, and I think the vertical triton racks as well. The 2020’s went back to optional power tower - my biggest complaint about my 2019 is poor sightlines due to the gigantic power tower bases combined with vertical board racks. They also clipped the windshield corners in 2019, which is useful for grabbing the dock from the helm. 2020 added transom seats, so the top deck is technically a little different. 2021 went to the new hull. They added surf pockets to the bimini sometime between 2014 and 2019, and they’re really nice to have. You can always have a canvas shop add those after the fact.

My experience is that every board rack on a G21 is a wakeboard rope magnet, so be careful. The racks and swivels are all expensive to repair.

Also, the original base motor was a ZR409, which is open/closed cooled. The ZR4 came around in ~2016ish, and it went all open cooled at some point prior to 2019. The Direct Injected H5 was optional sometime around 2017 or so. It’s less HP than the ZR4, but N3 did a ZR4/H5 G21 drag race to wakeboard speed and the H5 pulled the ZR4 by a bit. The DI motors are supposed to be a bit better on fuel consumption as well. I had the 409 in my 2014 and have the ZR4 in my 2019 and I’m more than happy with acceleration to wakeboard speed with full bags and a bunch of bodies in the boat. If I was up at 5000’ or something I might prop down, because the boat isn’t really happy up at 38mph anyways.

Great info. Couldn’t understand the 16-17 tech difference, but that makes sense. Because everything I read said new system in 2017 , but 16’s had all new dials too. So thanks for that. I have experience with DI’s. Especially on MC side. They are more quiet , smoother throughout the pull curve, and seem to run more fuel efficient in a noticeable manner. The standard 5.7 vs less HP 5.3DI is no contest. 5.3 all day

I haven’t read of failures on the LINC Touch, but the one-off nature caused me to avoid 2016’s in my search, sort of like the 2012 MC’s with the Medallion screen (though I think those were actually really problematic).

2012 MC is the electrical gremlin Mecca of tow boats. ……And the phantom year of the Xstar that was never made. Too many hull issues. I hear you on the one off parts and availability
