MB guy looking at G23

Howdy,

Bought an MB B52 few years back (first bought) after being bit by the surfer bug. Fast forward 3yrs and I've come to realize I will always be a mediocre surfer and don't need a crazy wave. With that said, I'm looking at a 2015 G23 as the interior is where I spend most of my time and this one is clean. I've read the 2015 don't throw the greatest wave, and the Polk Audio stereo is lackluster at best. Knowing these two cons, can anyone tell me any more or would this be a good purchase? I know I should be getting a 2018+ but the budget just isn't there for me.

Certainly nothing wrong with a 2015 G23. They are great boats!

Which engine does that boat have? Some of the early G boats with smaller engines and v-drives that were not 2:1 had issues planing with full ballast, but at surf speed, they aren't a problem.

2016 saw a hull modification that reduced spray at surf speeds, but the wake/wave wasn't affected by that change.

It's the 409.

My MB has swim grid spray at surf speed as well.

I would go 2016 or newer. Lots of important changes in 2016. Here is a video that goes over changes year by year. Its a fun watch.

Yeah, if it has a 409, you should bargain hard for a great price. That engine reduces the value of the boat quite a bit.

2014+ boats with the 409 and the 450 did get the 2:1 v-drive though, so that's good.

2015 was the last year that the 409 was offered in the G23 though, and there was a reason for that.

One last question...my 2016 MB B52 23ft, with integrated front bow bag for a total weight of 5700lbs of ballast, and raptor 400 - would buying the 2015 G23 be a step backwards as far as performance/wave is concerned, or a lateral move? The interior on the G23 is nicer for sure, but the stereo is definitely not (important to me) and the gel coat on the G has no. Flake (wife loves flake). She's asking $135KCAD for the G with 150hrs.

I don't want to bother with this if 2017+ is the way to go.

IIRC new hull in 2016 that was just way better overall. One nice thing about the G is all sub floor ballast. So you don't have to deal with bags taking up all your storage. IMO, a 2016 or newer G with factory ballast is a great surf wave. Kind of steep on the regular side but there are plenty of things you can do to mellow it out.

Personally, I wouldn't consider a G older than 2016 but that is just me.

I also found a 2018 GS22 - anyone have knowledge on that model? The lake I spend my summers at is zero elevation if that matters.

Nice colors on that one, got some flake! The GS is billed as a crossover hull so the wake is supposed to flatten out at speed. Which it does but there is huge hollow to navigate if you are a skier. There is one on our lake, in turquoise but not fan of that color on a boat that size.

There was a "flash sale" for a 2023 S23 in Kelowna but I see that is gone now off FB. When you do get it, bring it to Sproat Lake

Coming from a fully sacked out MB with a lot of weight, I suspect you would be underwhelmed by the GS wave. If you are considering a GS, I would try to demo it first.

GS is definitely out. I've been told G23 is the way to go. G21 would also be a nice choice as I hardly if ever have more than 8ppl on my boat.
