  • 2019 G23 vs Supra SL

Iím trying to decide on which 2019 boat Iím going to buy and am looking for some input. After looking at a lot of different boats Iíve narrowed it down to the G23 and the Supra SL. Iím just trying to get some input about what others would do. Price wise the G23 will cost me about 10K more than the supra. The resale on the G23 is way better than the supra and one of my concerns with the supra is the huge loss of value over the first few years compared to the G which seems to hold its value pretty well. The nautique dealer is giving me a better deal than the local supra dealer. The G23 has been my dream boat for the past 4 years. I plan on demoing both boats this week if the weather allows.

Supra Pros: dual ballast pumps per ballast bag, chill tech vinyl, transom surf locker, better rough water ride(so I hear), likely easier for my wife to drive, 3500 lbs subfloor ballasts, 7 year warranty (boat show promotion), Iíve been on a few supras and have liked their wakeboard wakes

Supra cons: concern about resale, and the stuff listed in the nautique pros

Nautique Pros: better looking boat, better quality interior, better resale, boats dry weight is 300 pounds more than the supra. Less bow rise during surfing, according to online posts the surf wave has more push and the wakeboard wake is better, Really like the local nautique dealer, wife wants a platform ladder(not an option on supra)

Nautique cons: more expensive, one ballast pump per bag, complaints about bow spray, props falling off, faulty oxygen sensors, bad belt tensioners, hull hasnít been updated since 2016, posts mention that the boat drives like a tank

Cons of both: power towers- I have a tall garage door built specifically to accommodate a boat tower. Iíll never need to lower the tower. I wish it was an option like it is on the malibus

I know this is a nautique site but I wanted to get opinions if the g23 is worth the extra 10K?

In my opinion, 100% yes. I looked at a 2017 Supra SL when I bought my G23. Literally took me all of 10 mins to decide it wasn't the boat for us. I believe the 18s and 19s are a little nicer inside but still not enough to sway me. For the record, I did not test drive a Supra.

^ No such thing as a 2017 Supra SL. 2018 is the first year.

you can add O2 sensor issues to the list of cons on the SL as well. Also surf tab actuators, power tower actuators, louder engine, and tons of software glitches on the new triple screen setup.

Demo both, and you'll probably have a better idea. I would give some weight to the choice of dealer. The service you get there will make a difference over the years you own it.

Thanks thatís nice to know about all the issues with the Supra. I figured because itís a newer model there wasnít as much history for people to post the problems theyíre having with it

Resale is a big one and Supras take much longer to sell as well. Fit/finish/quality/thoughtfulness by Nautique is like no one else. I also can't stand all the switches on the Supra, makes the dash look clunky in my opinion. My wife likes the safer feel of the G b/c of the lower bow when surfing/wakeboarding, when she can see better she feels more confident driving. Supra is a great boat however there is just no comparison to the G23. Biggest complaint has always been the higher price but I feel like you get what you pay for in this case.

It was probably a 2018 then. I honesty didnít pay that much attention. It looked like cheaper version of a previous gen MC with all the switches and bling. Reminded of a 70ís muscle car interior so we quickly moved on.

I too looked at both but was unable to demo the Supra. I think you have the comparison nailed down really well.

Dealer is very big- youíll be working with them a lot over the next few years of ownership.

As for me, I chose Nautique because I trusted my local dealer, everything in the Nautique was right where it should be (sit in both and just notice how easy it is to use the G) and because if I didnít get the G then every time I saw one at the lake Iíd be jealous and with this much of an expense I didnít want any regrets other than the hole in my bank account!

Demo should help you a lot- enjoy!

When you demo the G take a look at the ballast pumps. I just got a 19 G and the ballast fills and drains really fast. One thing that I noticed is that the pumps like to run with the engine RPMs higher than idle. I can actually hear the pumps speed up when I put the boat in gear and start moving. I am coming from a 2014 210 and have never had a G before, but the ballast pumps on the G are a lot bigger and there are more of them.

Also, my dealer told me you can custom order a 19 with the 2018 tower.
Having said that, I would still go with the power tower. I raise and lower my tower multiple times each time we go out and it works well.

How many ballast pumps are on the boat you have?

I need to look again and make sure I'm not going crazy, but I thought I saw 4.
I wasn't counting, I just opened the floor hatch and noticed that they were bigger and seemed to be more.
I am thinking there might be 2 per tank (6 total).
I will try and look tonight and verify.

Consider that the SL pumps require one to run the engine while filling and emptying. The pumps in the G will run with the engine off. This can save engine hours over the year(s).

Finally, the pumps in the G will run faster when the engine is operating over 800 - 1,000 RPM because the alternator is generating the current needed for the pumps to operate faster.

That would be very interesting if it has 6 pumps. Thanks for checking, this is the first I've heard of additional ballast pumps in the 19 boats.

Nope, there are only 3. Not sure what I was thinking.

Honestly Dustin, I would stop the conversation right here - "The G23 has been my dream boat". If that's the case and you buy the Supra, sooner or later you're gonna be looking across the lake at a G23 and feel that little twinge of regret in the back of your mind.
