I have the 450 watt Extreme as well and am very happy with it. You have to remember that the heater works on a resistance generated warmth like a heat sync. It is designed to heat soak the components it is protecting vs warming the air and shutting off prematurely. I also purchased the mounting quick release bracket but never could come up with a good mounting area for it in my 2008 210. I too worry about the power loss aspects at my storage facility, so I don't go much past 1st week in December before I go ahead and winterize. -
I have the 1000 watt boat safe heater, bit of overkill but I boat year round and live at a high enough elevation where it can freeze hard enough in the winter to cause problems (even in weeks where it was warm enough to wakeboard). I would definitely get something smaller if I had it to do again because the one I have is too big to actually mount in the engine compartment, but it should do a good job of protecting the ballast as well. I get nervous even with that as we sometimes lose power in the winter. There are solutions out there to extend piece of mind. I have wireless battery operated temperature sensors in the garage with a battery operated monitor with an audible alarm but that only works if I am at home. If we ever loose power and the boat approaches freezing my neighbors would probably think I am insane running the boat in the middle of the night to warm it up until I can properly winterize everything.
Last winter my boat made it through the cold week up at the shop in Phoenix (where it didn't freeze) for some warranty work, this year over the cold week I was on vacation so I winterized it for 2 weeks while I was away. Some fun.
I have my eye on the Elertus (http://www.elertus.com/products/) you can get it on amazon for like 200 bucks. They have one that has a door sensor so you can tell if anyone enters the garage and one with a water sensor (which would be great for boats in a wet slip) and you can configure it to push notifications to your phone or tablet or text you or email you when there is a problem like your boats sinking, someone broke in the garage, or its freezing. Only down side is you have to have wifi at the location where it is installed and I would really want to have a second remote temperature sensor that I could hang in the engine compartment. I think I would drive my wife nuts with it as well, as every time I was working in the garage it would send notifications that the door was open and someone was in there. It also wouldn't do me any good when the power was out as my router would be down as well, although I could spend my whole vacation constantly checking to see if it was available which would also drive my wife nuts.Leave a comment:

Yep, that's my fear with electric heaters. I like them for extending the season a little but they scare me for anything longer. One of the marina docks with 22 boats burned down this winter at our lake. Never heard the cause, but my first guess would be some sort of heater. They need to design it with a 12v dual power backup to connect off the boat's batteries. In the event 110v regular power goes out, you have a $3
-$10k freeze damage repair.
It'd probably run 2-3 days or more off the standard 2 battery setups, only kicks on enough to keep it 40-50degs or so in the engine compartment.Leave a comment:
