Thoughts on the 2013 Throttle Redesign?

I was gathering some background information for a potential purchase of a 200V, when I came across this thread in Ball of Spray regarding the redesigned 2013 throttle.

How have owners found the redesigned throttle, in particular the transition from forward or reverse into neutral? If there is indeed an issue, is there a known fix?

I have to say on the 2013 G I demoed I really didn't like the throttle. Much prefer my 08 210 throttle. I certainly loved the 550hp that was behind the throttle though! I just found it alittle awkward from reverse to neutral. A couple times it felt like it locked into neutral but stayed in reverse so I had to jiggle it. Nautique can do better.

I wouldn't say I love the throttle but it certainly isn't a huge deal to me. You do need to get accustomed to it but that doesn't take very long. My wife thought the neutral detent was rather small and it took her a while to be comfortable with it but after driving the boat a bit she doesn't have a problem anymore. I wouldn't let it influence a purchase decision.

I have a '13 200v and also do not like the throttle design nor the ease in shifting compared to my '05 211. I even requested my Dealer to investigate switching the throttle when I ordered the boat without success. I don't believe that it is just an issue with break in since I have 130 hrs on my 200v. With all that said, as Yiger stated "I wouldn't let it influence a purchase decision" either.

I liked the 2010 230 throttle (280hrs) better than the 2013 G23 (80hrs). It was a lot smoother, but I will live with it as other amenities far outweights the throttle.

Gotta admit I am surprised at the responses. I love the new throttle. As for the detents, I don't understand the issue. When switching from forward or reverse to neutral, you shouldn't be squeezing the ring. Just move the handle until it locks into neutral.

The throw is way different on the new throttle. 90 degrees is full throttle, whereas the older design went significantly past 90 degrees. This causes the feel of faster acceleration until you get used to it, but once you're used to it, it is great.

Jeff's response made me ask my wife if she was actually lifting the ring to go into neutral (not just to go out of it)- I had never thought to ask her that before. Well, I guess we've solved that problem as it was the cause of her issues. I always figured she knew it was only needed to leave neutral...

Jeff, thx for your comments; I will validate/evaluate the ring squeeze next time we get down to the lake (hopefully in 2 wks). Ergonomically, I still don't like the feel of the new throttle in my hand or the throttle stiffness when shifting (just personal preference). The throw has not been an issue for me; acceleration is fine.

I like the new throttle. I hate how the 96-12 throttle gets all loose and giggly with usage. I don't mind it much with my dad's gt-40 but I do like the stiffer operation coupled with the DWB. I hated the feeling of the DBW boats when they first came out with the looser throttle control.

This is all coming from a guy who prefers a Morse MV-1 Control with no safety lock out.

When I am in any safety lock out control style boat I just hold the ring up any time I am going between neutral, reverse, and forward.

There is a set screw that you can tighten when the throttle is in neutral. It requires a 1/8 Allen wrench to tighten it. In neutral, the Allen wrench goes up through a notch in the chrome ring, and you only have a little more than 1/6 of a turn, so you have to keep taking the Allen wrench out and back in.

If this screw gets too loose, the throttle handle can come disengaged from the splines on the gunnel mounted controller, and then the handle rotates around without changing the engine speed. Yes, this means you cannot throttle back at the end of a slalom, and if your boat has speed control, it will try to go around the turn island at the end of the course at 34 or 36 MPH.

I know about the set screw . I just always thought it was a poor design that it can and does back out and cause it to be loose.

I had major issues with mine. Beyond frustrated at times. The amount of force it took to get the thing in and out of gear was ridiculous. I believe it had a little to do with break in, but at just over 100hrs id say its "decent". I prefer the old style.

I took delivery on a 2014 200 OB last October and I had the same issue with the throttle. Very difficult to get it into reverse and there were a few times that it went into reverse harder then I expected after struggling with it. I just took the boat out of winter storage and I asked the dealer to check it out. They said its fine. Throttle by wire.....the issue is that there is a cable that goes from the throttle to a lever on the transmission for reverse, neutral, and forward. That lever is very stiff. I only have about 10 hours on it so I am hoping it will improve with time. Anyone else have this issue resolved?

At first I liked the feel but not the stiffness, love it after 20 hours and wouldn't go back. It did take a little to get used too, in fact I forgot about the first usage until reading this thread.

2011 throttle was so loose if I hit anything when just out lake cruising it would drop. Way too loose.
