How are engine hours calculated? Does the motor have to be running or just the ignition on?

I believe the engine hours are only counted when the engine is running.

On your 2012 it's when the engine is running. Back in the day, they started tallying once the key was put into the "on" position. I have a friend who tallyed a few hours by turning his key to the "on" position to listen to his radio when parked, when he should've turned the key left to the acc power position. Whoops!

Per Jason Clark at Faria: The hours are reported from the ECU to the gateway. Then the gateway send the information to the tach.

Actually, those old ones didn't have an accessory position. My 81 only does because I installed a new ignition.
