  • Bolt on Tensioner Pulley: Hand Tighten?

My Serp belt shredded on my PCM 5.7 330hp only 3 months after I replaced the belt. When I first replaced the belt, I removed the bolt on the tensioner pulley by mistake and tightened it with a wrench when I put it back on. I read on another Post that this bolt should be hand tightened.

I speculate that the belt shredded because I incorrectly tightened the bolt or positoined it improperly.

I would appreciate advice on this before I install a new belt. Thank you.

I am kind of thinking it does not matter as long as the pulley turns freely...which you can easily check by removing the belt, and giving the pulley a spin by hand.

When you release the tension on the pulley to remove the belt, that should be sufficiently tight. I just went through a shredded squeaky belt, and believe it was caused by a weak tensioner. the new tensioner was substantially stronger than the one I removed. The spring definitely provided more tension on the belt. Again, not sure if it was bad, but that was all I could come up with damaging a one year old belt.
