View Full Version : need some cd player expertise
I have a '91 SN that has just a tape deck for a stereo. My local "Ultimate Electronics" had a CD player head unit that also plays MP3's on sale this weekend for $99. I went and snatched one up for use in the boat. Turns out, the installation instructions specify the unit cannot be mounted past 20 degrees of horizontal. The unit in the boat will definitely be out of that range. Just wondering if that is normal for most players or if I just need to quit being a cheap skate and get something name brand.

I've never head of anything like that, but it might be a possibility due to the way it holds the CD in place inside. "Real" CD players can hold it upright, so I really don't know why this one specifies 20 degrees. Even if you mount it perfectly horizontal, how much bow rise do you get under initial acceleration?
You get what you pay for, $99 for an head unit that plays mp3s is dirt cheap.
The problem is, the location that it mounts in is in the glove box in the dash and it sits in there at about a 45 degree angle. I'm sure it must be because it's such an inexpensive unit it doesn't hold the disc right unless it is horizontal. I'll just have to go get a "real" one.
