1988 s/n 2001 speaker placement

where are speakers supposed to go in an 1988 2001. there is some bad looking 6x9 under the back seat. probably a really harsh enviroment down there. no front speakers? did stereo come in the dash from factory? or did someone cut it out

I just solved that same problem. I mounted them on the side panel just behind the throttle and in the same place on the opposite side. I mounted a pair of Sony 6" rounds. Not sure if a stereo was stock but I think it was an option. When I replaced the stereo (it came w/cassette) the hole looked like it was done at the factory.

I did a quick install of a receiever in the glove box, and made 2 speaker holders that dig into the floor in the rear and bolt under the gunnel as far back as i could while still being able to slide out the seats. I also have 2 6x9 boxes in the bow which i pull out while cruising or just leave in there to blast out the side by the driver's feet. I had my hands full doing a completely custom install of over $3,000 worth of stereo equipment in my car last spring, so the boat will get an overhaul and all new components next spring. Those 6x9s may actually be 4x10s. I thought I had 6x9s, but when I went to replace them I found out they were 4x10s. So, I put in a pair of pioneers and they sound really good. I haven't had any problem with them being under the back seat either. I want to add some speakers up front also. How difficult is it to cut into the side of the boat?

hey hwood that looks good what did you make the boxes out of? treated plywood/carpet? do you have speakers under the back seat? i have been thinking about doing what waternuts did. but im worried about going through the vinyl and pad. i think the hole saw will catch it, and destroy it. and the other problem w/ that is there is a speaker right in my ear. but i could run a on/ off switch to that one speaker. do you have a sub in there? i have a 10" in a tube. want to upgrade to 2-12"s or 1-15"thou. think i can build a custom box to fit on the wasted space on the right {starbord}. on the other side of the bulkhead. i also dont know if i should run ported or sealed. i like ported better, but on a salt water boat. it might jack it up fast.
hows the weather up there? over cast and cold here. for here anyway.65hi/55low. water temp is 75. winter sucks. except for our annual snowboard trip.

Currently no sub, front of speaker thingy is made of cheapa$$ particle board, sides are MDF. It was a real hackjob, they were painted black and then completely resined. If funds allow it...next year will be a second battery(yellow top), amp, better speakers all around and a single 10 or 12 sub......maybe.

And we had a high of 30 degrees today, no sun.

edit - We'd almost kill for temps like you have during winter. Water temps are around 40.

yep, we are brothers(i'll change my profile pic) and yes it is rather cold.

we just wanted something easy and fast to put together to get the stereo up and running. Great first draft, second will be completely sealed.

I would go with a sealed box. The life of the sub would be more important than the minimal sound difference with ported/sealed.

I did the hack job speaker mounts out of materials I had laying around from previous projects. The stereo is the one I removed from my car when I upgraded my entire 'system' (<- hate using that word because of all the clowns that don't know squat bragging about their 'systems'...anyways). The whole boat stereo was made out of used components, didn't have any $$ to spend on anything. The mounts were sprayed at work for nothing (was gonna leave them just painted too). The whole project took a few hours and costed us nothing, besides the rear marine speakers we've had for a year that were $35.

I wasn't too keen on drilling through the glass/vinyl either. They are just as good a foot lower. I'm confused with your placing on the sub.

Next year WILL have; an amp, new speakers all around, and atleast one 10" sub.

I'd kill for even 60 degree water temp right now. Air temp doesn't matter to me. I'll be investing in an Ocean Rodeo baggy drysuit next year for sure.

old post i know,new member.heres what i did.
took 1/4 inch plywood,cut speeker holes,sealed wood,installed carpet,and speakers. On the floor i installed 3/8 alum chanel[from home depot] with s.s.screws to the floor for the bottom of the plywood to sit in. I drilled out two rivits in the alum trim at the bottom of the gunnel[or what ever you call it]at each end of the plywood. Slide the top of the plywood behind the gunnel and the bottom of the plywood down into the alum. channel. through screws into gonnel and through the top of the plywood.you can reach your hand behind the plywood to hold the nut.works and sounds great.anybody that wants better close up pics,let me know.by the way,great site.michale.

Yes,4 amps,10 speekers,4 small subs,music keg,wired remote on the back of the boat.My boat has just a cushon for the rear seat si i built a 2x4 box that houses all the amps,etc.i took 12v computer fans and mounted them in the front side of the box.1 blowing onto each amp.
i see your sterio is on the driver side.mine is mounted in the same place,just on the pasenger side.i hated to cut a hole in the boat but there was no other place to mount it.besides my sterio came with a wireless remote that i keep velcroed to the dash.also installed a wired remote to the stern.you can see it above the vent in one of the pics.do you ski with your boat?.great wake board wake but a little tall for h2o ski.

michale, are you sure your boat is an 86? It sure looks like an 85 to me. Check the HIN on the transom.

your right,it is an 85.the guy i bought it from [the orig. owner]said it was an 86.now i know why all the 86s have more interior.well i bought it for the wake,so i thought.i thought it would have a good ski wake.not so.as it turns out its a better board wake.thats ok,my 10 yo skis and now he wants to wakeboard.so the pole.besides the pole gives me somewere to mount the video camera.i also mounted a video screen at the dash so when the video camera follows the skier or border i can see what its recording.when i am not recording i just use the video monitor instead of a miror.

what i like about it the most is how easy it is to drive.i even have my wife pulling me now and she cant even drive a car worth a dam.my ski partner has a 24 ft mc and that thing is like driving a tuna boat.
