I know there are a few inland lakes in Ohio but have never been on any of them I would like to start checking them out. Any suggestions?

Dave. We ski on a private lake near Berlin Res. (Youngstown/Alliance area) Around us there are several spots to find some nice water. Berlin is busy but good, Milton is better, West Branch is busy but great during the week. There are a bunch of private and smaller public lakes around here, let me know when you are out this way, I can get you more info. Get in touch with the guys at Mid Ohio Nautiques they are pretty up on the good spots from Sandusky to the east and even down to Columbus. They are a good bunch of guys and are always willing to help. Feel free to email if you want more info. cderosa@sssnet.com
Indian Lake near columbus is nice, also Grand Lake St Mary near Bellfountaine. Lake Hamilton over near Ft. Wayne Indiana is supposed to be nice too. Berlin reservoir is over on the east side of Ohio and it tends to get a bit crowded.

Hamilton Lake is about 6 miles from us. It's okay for short day trips. The lake is 802 acres and the public access isn't very large. Couple that with having to fight the bass fishermen for a parking spot and lake space it becomes less attractive. There are 2 private marinas on the lake but I do not know what they charge.

I know one way you can find out for sure. Eric and the guys from Mid-Ohio Nautiques are going to be hosting a Nautique Owners Reunion in June. The site is going to be Cedar Point, right on the lake. They will have the 2004 Nautiques available for demos, and I am sure they'll have at least one 211 there that day.

The Midwest Correct Craft Owners Reunion will be at Cedar Point Amusement Park in 2004. The date is Saturday June 19th. We hope to make this even bigger and better than before. Ralph Meloon, Greg Meloon and myself meet with officials of the park on Monday. This site is gonna be great and the whole family will have a good time. I will see to it that Jeff gets a copy of the entry form just as soon as it is printed. Sorry about the date Jeff.. ..didnt have much of a choice.

I periodically make it down to Rocky Fork Lake, maybe an hour east of Cincy. Also from time to time I hook up with friends at Caesar's Creek just south of Wilmington. Conditions there are pretty brutal most of the time, though.
My normal stomping ground is Griggs Reservoir in Columbus.

I'm a new correct craft owner :compress: and I'm looking for places to ride in central Ohio either during the week or for a short time on the weekends. So far I have played around on Alum Creek and the river but have not ventured on to other waters.
For long weekends I will go to the familiar waters of Lake Cumberland.
I was talking with a boater that spends a lot of time on Lake Erie and she told me that I would be able to drop into Lake Erie in August. The lake is calm and I would be able to make it to Put-in-Bay with no problems. Any thoughts?
I plan on attending the reunion and will ask around at that time.

SocBum, what river are you referring to, Griggs? You won't get much better conditions anywhere near Columbus than there. Alum Creek is horrible. Another option is O'Shaugnessy, close to the Cols Zoo. Not as travelled on weekends and pretty darn good for the riding crowd.
As for Lake Erie, you couldn't pay me enough to put my SAN in that water. The conditions go bad in a heartbeat and we're running some of the lowest freeboard in the wakeboard community. My brother in-law grew up on Erie and has had boats all his life, and he gets nervous running his 24' Checkmate up there at times.
Awesome you're hitting the reunion at Cedar Point, though! I'm trying to wrangle that, too.

jhiestand Thanks for the info! I have not tried Griggs. O'Shaugnessy is the river/dam that I was referring to. I concur with you on your thoughts about Alum, it sucks!!
When I was told about going on Lake Erie I was skeptical and thought I would get some other peoples opinion. The lake can get nasty in a heart beat.
Good luck on getting to the reunion. I'm packed up and ready to go

Hey all you ohio Nautiques,
Anyone from the eastern border near Pa.?
I bought my boat from a guy named Burt Devries. (I think it was near Youngstown?) back around 1988. He was into Nautiques and buying a new one every few years. Just wondering if he's still around? If anyone knows him tell him the guy with his '84' 2001 says hi. :D

We do our skiing at Berlin Res. the water is smooth until 10:00 a.m. then all the weekenders come out with tubes, jet skis, and unlimited horsepower. Also during the week the water stay's flat all day. Plus there is alot of coves to sit in during the afternoon hours. Overall it's a great place to stay the summer at. If it ever get's here this year.

Berlin is N.E. Ohio. There are a number of slow areas too. Wide open, windy...best suited to tubing and recreational skiing from my experience.

Thanks for the warm welcom Socbum. Berlin is in between Youngstown and Akron on Rt. 224. Yes there are alot of no wake areas but if you go thru them you end up where the lake narrows and thats where the best skiing is. efox must have been in area 1 or 2. There are 5 areas in this lake. Still love this lake, besides I'm not going to move.

Thanks, I'm always keeping my ears open for new places. We have a place that is similiar -- Alum creek. On the weekend tubing, recreational skiing and maybe some kneeboarding. During the week you can find some calm waters. The family loves it and it is close so we will continue to go.

Actually a really good friend of ours has a family place up there. We live in Lawrenceburg. My bud and his wife have a red 90 Ski supreme but I don't think they leave it there more than a month during the summer.
Eric
As for the Nauti dealer in Cincy...I sort of doubt it. MD in Indianapolis and Mid Ohio..now with a couple of locations are a little too close. There have been a couple people start them, but they haven't lasted long. If anyone were interested in starting one...I'd be interested in getting on board. I have access to a private lake and perhaps have a line on a large private lake for sale...

Hey SocBum,
Griggs is a good place to ski if you can't find a private site to ski on. Also, if you are looking for other places in central Ohio. I ski with some guys up in Mansfield that just finished up thier private lake. They are always looking for people to come and check out there site. As for taking the boat on Lake Erie, I have worked on the lake for a tow company, I would say just be very careful. On a calm day you should be alright, but if the weather turns bad, you are in big trouble. I would hate to have to come out and pull your boat off the bottom. However, there are a few bays and rivers up there that are really good to ski on. My friends and I ride a lot on the Sandusky River, the best kept secert up there.

Thanks for the advice about Erie. I think I will stick to the cruiser on Erie and leave the 210 for calmer waters. Last year we were hanging out by Cedar Point and a I saw a guy in a bu. I watched the water toss that thing around and I thought it was going to get swamped. YIKES!!!! I don't need to give you any more salvage business 8-)

I have friends that live in Bay Village that can sometimes get great water near the shore on calm mornings or when there is a south wind. You do have to watch out for sudden storms though. Still can't beat inland lakes.

I was out on Alum last weekend (raining today Yellow_Flash_Colorz: ) and passed by a '02 or '03 SAN with just about the same colors as me! (Blue secondary stripe instead of grey)
We unloaded at the same time and the ramp was very busy. When I finished with my wipe down I was going to stop by and introduce myself, but they pulled out and left quickly. (BTW -- Thanks for the compliment and back at you!)
First SAN that I have seen on Alum since I bought mine and I wondered if you are on this site as well? Great to have another one on the lake!

You can keep an eye on Griggs temp online via the USGS (http://waterdata.usgs.gov/oh/nwis/uv/?site_no=03220510&PARAmeter_cd=00065,00060,00010) site. You have to convert temperature from celsius, but it's accurate. Check it out.

So SA, who/where is your dealer? I bought my boat at MD Boats in Indy, then used Nickayle Lake Sports in Newark for a while (went out of business), then Mid Ohio when they were still affiliated with Mid Ohio Nautiques and now the closest dealer I know of is MD again?
BTW, the daytime high is supposed to drop 30 degrees on Wednesday, so if you can scoot out a day earlier you may be better off. Gotta love Ohio weather!!!

So SA, who/where is your dealer?
I use Vandevere Marine. They are right here in Akron, literally 4 minutes from my house...pass them every Sunday on my way to church. Jason Hoychick is the sales guy and Dan Mendolera is the service guy. Dan used to work at Mid-Ohio. I have been pleased with their service.
www.vandeveremarine.com
You can see their lake (Emerald) from I-76 (heading west from Akron) after the Barber road exit; or you can drive by the entrance. It's gorgeous. They host practice for a ski team there every Wednesday during the summer, it's free to come and watch and it draws a crowd of over 500. I think they even held nationals there several years ago.
To me it's a great example of an owner (Mike Vandevere) having an ambassador's spirit for the sport. He's and most of his family participate on the ski team, so you can chat with him and get to know him.
The rest of boys from Mid-Ohio (Chris and James) set up their own dealership near West Branch (there's a post somewhere in the Off Topic section).
I hear you about the Ohio weather, my ski buddy just spent a couple of days in CA skiing so I've got the itch!
