I've always wanted to do this but thought I'd get booed off the site. After seeing the response to Dog Owners - Need Advice, I see that this is well overdue.

Please post pictures and stories of you dogs on your boats here.

I grew up in NYC with a cocker spaniel and then a German Sheppard. As a grownup, I always thought I'd pass on having a dog in the city and I still would if it hadn't been for my impetuous wife. She and my daughter just decided to bring home Lucy without any discussion! But in the end, all was good and I'm sorry she waited so long.

Recently, she has been helping relocate forgotten labs out of the south and find them homes here in the northeast. Because of this, we now have two labs. Meet Lucy and Pearl.

We are in the process of getting a Golden. Been an avid waterski competitor most of my adult life and pretty fussy about my boats......but look forward to a boat buddy/house pet buddy. My wife and I are retired.....at least I am.....she is about to be 8-) Want a go every where, do every thing dog. Hoping if we start out right it will be an excellent experience. The breeders we are talking to are fussyer than people adoptions. We'll play the going in the boat one day at a time and starting young maybe it can be a good thing.

I really appreciate the topic and the pictures.

Yea she does alright one of the first times we went out with her she tried to jump in and save me before she realized that her legs are way to short for much swimming. She made it bacl to the boat but she was a little freaked out.

I agree,
She was just sitting in my boat while we loaded the car.
Amazingly she did not try to get out.

Nice pics guys, I dont have any of Mr. Ben riding in our '88 but he loves it. When my wife is pulling me we have to tie him down so that he does not jump out and try and swim to me while I'm skiing. He will ride from the house to the launch in the boats driver's seat like he owns it. ha

You got to think I'm crazy, but I have 3 black labs and a chocolate lab. Yes they go riding. In 2003 I needed to upgrade from a 196 because of the birth of our son. NOT enough room for 4 dogs and his car seat, the dogs suffered that summer. Upgraded to MC 230 in 2003 and all was well, except for the MC and some quality issues I was having, and it was just too big a boat. That 196 was still the best boat ever. Bought a 211 last year, the perfect boat for me, walk through in back, removable carpet, just as big on inside, and was a ski boat at heart. If you notice that 2 of the dogs are leashed to the ski pole, it's to keep them in the boat while riding and slowing down. When the large black one was a puppy she would jump out at speed or when slowing down. It was funny at first, but I grew tired of that quickly. I decided to tie her to the ski pole of the SN 196. I jumped out for a swim and came to the surface to hear my wife screaming. The stupid dog had jumped oved and noosed herself on the side of the boat. I get in the boat and pull her in, but so long as that leash is on, she will not jump out of the boat. Her daughter, not as smart, so she is still on a real SHORT leash. I agree with the folks who run and swim them to complete exhaustion before the boat rides. The stupid dog stories are endless, but they do not get to ride as much as before. Attached are some pics from Smith Mountain Lake last week.

This is what I'm talking about. A real and serious concern. If you feel that the dog must be tied up, please use a leash short enough to keep the dog in the boat and try a shoulder harness - which is just more humane anyway. I figure that dog is actually safer if they do jump out, as they will surface and just swim till you pick them up. Thanks.

All great pictures!

I'm going to make a shameless plug here. If anyone is interested in taking in or fostering a rescued Lab, please PM me. My wife actively participates on www.labs4rescue.com which takes abandoned Labs from LA, MS, AR and brings them up to the northeast. Over 20 dogs are transported a week, so there's plenty for everyone!

Ya'll - I love my dogs: Golden Retriever and a Bernese Mountain Dog, but seriously - there's no way I would let them on my seats...that's asking for guaranteed rips...right? How do you keep from getting damage?

we just got our yellow lab from TN through labs4rescue. he is one of the best things that has ever happened to the family and he loves being in the water. he's still new to us and the area so he gets scared on the docks and around the boats sometimes, so no boat pictures yet. he also gets scared of things like the microwave, blender, vibrating phones, etc.
heres him with my girlfriend laura.

Has anyone had damage done to the seats from the dogs nails? How do you prevent it?

07-13-2007, 12:54 PM
Curious on that as well. My lab is an "enthusiastic" dog when I take him on the aluminum fishing boat. I don't think I'd do well having him running all over the seats.

My girfriend convinced me to bring her mutts out on the boat (pug terriers) and they were all over the place. No damage but I was not cool with it and they are now banned. I love dogs but not in my boat.

My son's lab is always with us on the boat and has been since he was a pup. Never had any damage. We use a rubber backed door mat over the storage locker "just in case", but he usually clears it completely when he jumps in from the platform.
