Hi All...I'm new to the site & This is the season that I buy my own boat...I am Shopping for a starter boat & have set my eyes on a XX Ski Nautique 2001 for wakeboarding...
I have several that I am looking at to include: 84 (restored), 85, 87, & an 89...
Anyone have any comments or know of any differences in the years that should influence my decision? I definately will be wakeboarding, adding a tower, adding weight (fat sacks, sand), and/or looking at the possibility of customizing a hardline ballast system...
Thanks!
I believe that in 89 CC went to the gear reduction tranny. Other than that I don't know if there is signficant mechancial differences in the late 80's boats.
Good luck.

SGY, thanks for the tip...What does that mean?

did they go to regular rotation motors in the late 80's also?
gear reduction means the shaft and prop turns at a lower speed than the motor to minimize vibration. a 1:1 tranny will turn the prop 4000 rpm when the motor is turning 4000 rpm. a reduction tranny slows the prop down, but performance remains constant by an increase in prop pitch.

86 and newer interior is far better and better looking. hulls all the same. but mostly cosmetic windshields changes a couple of times, stripes, stickers, pylon, intake vents, dash. thats about all ican think of now . there great boats. tiny but great.

Yeah, in 1989 they added the Invertaflo Vernay exhaust system and 1:1.23 reduction system. Because of this trans, the engine can spin regular rotation and the prop still turns RH because of the trans. This is something to consider as replacing a regular rotation engine is easier than finding a reverse rotation engine. The trans significantly increases torque to the slower turning prop. There is a 1989 brochure available at correctcraftfan.com

The engine also sits level with this tranny combo. Much more efficient.

Loud pipes save lives, I vote for the 87.

If its an 88' Its gotta be great!
I know we all look with fondness on simpler days--but I gotta tell ya, I loved my 1988 SN. It was a beaut. The days of just a seat and a motor are gone. I wish I knew what I had when I had it--but I was in a big hurry to upgrade. I highly recommend a boat of that vintage. Jim, a former CC customer service rep, told me that with the gear reduction in 89, CC actually detuned the motor a bit--to 240hp as opposed to the 255hp that was in the 88 SN. (At least that is what I recall.)
The 1988 SN is a great boat. No question. You might call CC to get the full low down on the differences between the 88 and 89.

Any pictures of your old 88 Steve?
The 88 SN was infact my first love, and still is!
Here are some pictures. I had just got it wet sanded and decided not to put the decals back on. I hope this works.
Here are some more. You shouldn't got me started.

Looks to be in great shape! Do you wakeboard? If so, what do you put for weight in it?
My son wakeboards. We didn't put any weight in it--other than people. I sold the boat to a doc in Wisconsion. I hope he's taking care of it.
Good luck on your purchase decision.

We had a '88 Barefoot Nautique 2001. My brother in law has got it and it's great!!!
The interior of '86 and newer are much nicer. Expecially the '88-'89 versions. The '89 version is the first Nauti with a single exhaust and gear reduction.
If I was looking for a Nauti 2001 a going to look at a 88-89 version (for the modern dashboard)....
But some weight (500) in the back and (250) in the front and the wake is perfect. Put more in it and the wake is great...

Kwanx,
I don't know where you live but I just added my 2001 to the For Sale list. I love this boat but we decided we wanted a bigger boat. Check it out. "1982 Ski Nautique 2001"

SGY, If you wouldn't mind emailing me some more pictures, I'd truely appreciate it. I think zipping them would make it easier for you. Do happen to know where this 'doc' lives in Wisconsin? Wisconsin is a big place with many lakes, but I will keep my eyes peeled for a red/gray 88 w/o graphics next summer.
Also, is that gray carpet original? Most of the 80's SNs i've come across have the carpet matching the main stripe color. Our boat has black carpet (I think looks much better than it would red) and obviously doesn't stain or get as dirty as the colored carpets would.
Horrywood (sorry can't resist-your call sigh reminds me of that Belushi flick with the lost Japanese solidier. He opens the hatch of his sub and spots the moniker on the side of the mountain and says to himself: "Horrywood". Gotta love it.)
Anyway, I'm not sure where the doc lives. He might be down in the Green Bay area. I know he summers quite a bit around the Three Lakes area. John LeMond at Watercraft Sales helped me sell the boat. A good friend of mine has a group of cabins on Rangeline lake--on the Three Lakes chain. His name is Ross Williams--ever heard of him?
I'll email you all the pics I have. By the way, I had to put the decals back on the boat in the sale. The decals are stock and look pretty good.

Hmm, never thought you could get the decals off and be able to put them back on w/o ruining them.
Oh, and the whole "l=r" thing for the orientals...I definitely use that on a daily basis. I like to sing the christmas carol from "A Christmas Story" when the family goes to the restaurant because the dogs ate the food. "'Tis the season to be jorry, Fa ra ra ra ra, ra ra ra ra"
Sorry for my poor communciation. I ordered the decals new from West Coast Correct Craft. What I meant to say was that they were stock appearing.
Yeah, taking decals off and putting them back on would be quite a chore.

hollywood, are the '87's louder than the other years? mine is an '87 and is very loud and I thought that it was just the mufflers had rusted or something...

The new Vernay mufflers came out in 89, I don't know when the last muffler change was made before that, but i'd guess the 82-88s all should sound the same.
