View Full Version : threading problem: castle nut on prop shaft

Today we got into some shallow water and banged-up our prop a bit on some gravel.

When I tried to change the prop I found the prop was really stuck onto the shaft. I used a prop puller to remove the prop. When the prop broke loose from the shaft I heard a loud noise, then felt my head having impact with something (probably the boat's transom, or maybe the trailer's prop guard).

I slipped the new prop into place, but the castle nut wouldn't thread onto the shaft. It wouldn't even go one turn. I noticed the first turn of thread on the shaft was slightly bent.

I tried to slip the nut on again and turned it with a wrench. I saw tiny shavings of brass falling so I stopped.

Anybody know what's the best way to true the threads on the shaft so I can get the castle nut back into place and get the boat back in the water where it belongs?

Use a hacksaw blade or fine file to cut away part of the bent thread.
