View Full Version : My thoughts on the Nautique booklet I received in the mail

First of all, let me preface my comments by saying I'm a casual skier/wakeboarder/tuber who owns a '97 Sport Nautique and doesn't use it nearly enough. I have in recent years been able to get more active on the water and I was throwing around the idea of trading in/selling my '97 for a newer boat, especially because I have two different parties interested in buying my current boat. For this reason, I went to the Nautique website, filled out the info, etc... and now I have a booklet sitting in front of me.

Where are the dates on this thing? Maybe I missed it, but there is nothing on the front or back cover that states whether the boats and options I'm looking at are for '03 or '04 (or maybe even '02, who knows?). The only place I could find a date was in the fine print at the bottom of the color options page, way in the back, where 2004 is listed next to the copyright logo. So which model year is it?

While I like our Sport Nautique, I would consider an open bow Ski Nautique 206, but I'd have to check out the open bow area and walk-through in person before I made that decision.

In looking at the Sport Nautique 216 and the Air Nautique 216 in the catalog, the major differences between the two seem to be the ballast tanks, tower and swim platform. I am not serious enough about wakeboarding to want ballast tanks, but I would like the tower and I absolutely hate my teak platform and would much rather have the composite platform. Would it be possible to order a Sport Nautique with the tower and composite platform, but without the ballast tanks?

I'm also not crazy about the tape pinstriping on my '97. I thought it was kind of low-quality when I originally bought the boat new and my feelings haven't changed much. Have they done away with the tape yet?

Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but unless I let the gas trickle into the boat, it almost always spills over when I'm filling it up. Am I doing it wrong or have they corrected this problem? The gas also messed up my tape and stained my hull when it expanded and seeped out of the overflow/air vent.

There's a couple of other nagging issues, but they could be attributed to the dealer, so I won't bother mentioning them in this thread. Any input/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Jim

If you just received your booklet, I would assume that you have one listing the 2004 models. To be sure, go to www.correctcraft.com and compare the pictures to the ones in your booklet. The '04 models are easily distinguishable from the '03 models.

I have a 1994 Ski Nautique, and I agree with you on the tape striping. I need to have mine redone, but have not gotten around to it yet. Maybe this winter I'll take it in and have it redone. Any automotive body shop should be able to handle that job easily. I'm not sure if they're still using tape or not. I'm sure someone else with a newer boat will jump in and answer that one for you.

The fuel filler problem you mention was a big problem for me when filling both on and off the water. I have come up with what I think is a pretty good solution. Before fueling, turn the key to the ON position so that the gauges activate. Fill the tank at a normal rate, watching the gauge. When it gets close to full, slow the pump down. That has solved the spraying fuel problem for me. BTW I also have the stained deck from the fuel vent. Not much we can do about that. Hopefully they've fixed that probelm for the newer models.

I do the same thing with my gauges, but still always manage to spill a little when I'm filling up. The gas that comes out when it warms up and expands out the vent really drives me nuts though.

I still don't understand why they wouldn't put a model year anywhere in their literature other than the fine print.

You can order the sport with a tower and no tanks and a composite platform. Order the "limited" model and specify that you want the composite platform and the tower. There is still pin stripe but less of it in 2004. The gas filling is not an issue on the newer boats. You can put the nozzle on full blast and it won't over spill. Let me know if you have more questions!

Also, on the new boats they are dual filler so much more convenient. It has been hit or miss whether I spill some/alot or non. I usually fill with a paper towel wrapped around the filler on the neck to "try" and catch some of the overfill. Also, they have changed the sizing of the filler neck, they now have a really small filler hole for the nozzle to fit into and I've spent about 40 minutes at a marina trying to get fuel into the tank because they had an old filler nozzle which was larger than the on land filler nozzles. Been thinking about carrying a funnel for just said problem.

Thanks for the input on the ordering options. After talking it over with my local dealer, it seems like an open bow Ski Nautique might be better suited for my needs, since I slalom ski more than anything else. Can you order an open bow Ski Nautique with a tower and composite platform?

I know you can get the composit platform, but I can't find an option for a tower on a Ski Nautique. I know they offered the Spider Tower last year, and I am surprised that I don't see it as an option this year. The trick skiers and ski-fly people loved it. They do show the extended pylon from the Air Nautique as an option.

Malibu has the same problem. Found the solution and procedure on a Fuel Air Separator @ http://malibuboatowners.com/fuelair.php

Installed on my 95 Sport and works great
